Gateway MX6453 CPU Upgrade Question

Hey guys just purchased my first ever laptop.Ohhhhh Yea.
K so anyway, it is the Gateway MX6453, and I am wondering if it is possible to upgrade the processor from a tl-52 to tl-60? I found a place that sells them(ebay), and i believe both processors are 35W if Im not mistaken. So does anyone out there know if it is possible since I really dont want to pay $200 and have the thing not work. I have opened the back of the laptop and it looks like it is a breeze to remove the cooling on the cpu. Any help what so ever would be much upreciated. Thnx!

brand new machine and u r willing to blow the warranty by messing about with the cpu? brave soul!

try clean up ur startup processes and services, add more ram and clone the system to a faster hard drive before playing around with the cpu replacement. In many (most) times performance will be dramatically imcreased without even touching the cpu upgrade.

but then if u should insist - tl52 to tl60 is doable

cheers ...

Yeah it's doable but, you will have to upgrade the BIOS if you plan on running Vista in that Rig? and you won't really notice any difference upgrading your Proc, your best bet would be to upgrade that SLOW 4200RPM notebook Hard Drive that ships with your MX6453, and you can get a 7200RPM one for way under $120, but, as ghn stated, and I agree with him "YOU BREAK IT YOU FIX IT"...........and your on your own with NO HELP form Gateway at all ......................if you don't mind me asking? Where did you purchase your MX6453? did you get it HERE: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...723&CatId=1897, I've been looking at this for well over a month now...........the $599 price tag is VERY TEMPTING, but, I don't think I want it that BAD? it's about as good as my MX6447 without the 1.6Gig AMD x2 Duo Core, it has the same specs (uses the very same drivers) and uses the the VERY same motherboard with the exception of a Single Core Proc........If your planning on running Vista Home Premium or Higher, I can vouch, that this Rig will run Vista VERY WELL!!!

Thnx for the reply, on the bad side im not going to be making that upgrade, on the GOOD side, my laptop broke YAY now i get to return it and invest in a better one, not gateway preferably. This way there will be no need to upgrde anything. Wowawewa, lucky me

Gateway MX6453 cpu upgrade from tl-52 to tl-68

Is it possible to upgrade from tl-52 to a tl-68? If not what is the highest TL- designation that this laptop will accept w/ bios upgrade or without.

Thanks,

Mark

Going from 1.6 to 2.4 ghz? Quite a jump there. I am not sure about this. But as mentioned above the TL-60 has been known to replace the TL-52 on this notebook with no issue and no BIOS change.

I would like to go to a TL-66 at least, 2.3 ghz. Might still be too much of a jump. Opinion?

Hard to say. We did not have anything greater than the TL-60 at the time. So you might be the first one to give it a go.

Is there a possibility or likelyhood that attempting to go to a tl-66 or tl-68 will cause some damage to the motherboard or other components?

You won't damage the motherboard. It will just not boot or tell you wrong CPU. Just make sure that thermal paste has been applied and the heat-sink screwed down correctly before restart.

But this does not include your doing something that can damage the motherboard during disassembly ;-)

Thanks for all the input. I think I will attempt the TL-66 because its around 80 dollars less than the TL-68 currently, on ebay anyway.

Oops got the TL-66 price mixed up with something else. The TL-66 is very close and in some cases more than the TL-68. I can drop back to a TL-64 for 90 dollars.

Good lucks. Let us know how it turns out; this will be interesting for other forum members. Take pics and share with us.

Should work fine slight increase in thermal stress from 31w to 35w TDP not that big of a deal unless you already have heat issues. A good thermal compound is a very good idea.

one thing to remember. The Turions can come with a 65nm (nanometer) die, and some with 90nm die. If you have an original Kite platform, the 65nm will most likely not work. Check your chipset to see if it will work with 65nm version. If 90nm only, then you are limited to a TL-64

Are you sure? I mean same socket? Same socket what could you mean? I mean if one doesn't fit the other will not either. Of course the ultras won't fit but what is kite? S1 is S1? Or not. Not asking about S1G2?
it is s1, but not all chipsets will support the 65nm versions.

kite was the AMD platform codename for the S1 processors

kite is the original 90nm platform, with the kite refresh supporting 65nm.

I have installed an AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-64 TMDTL64HAX5DC
So far works ok. Boots ok. However the bios ver. 84.06 (newest version on Gateway's support page) does not recognize the processor and has it labled as " AMD unknown Processor 2.2 GHz". On first boot Windows 7 loaded generic drivers for AMD processor and it also has it labeled the same as BIOS. Task Manager indicates activity on both cores. Are there some advantages the laptop will miss out on due to not recognizing the processor?
