My laptop display got fried by a Gateway Monitor?

I bought a 24” Gateway LCD Monitor – does 1920 x 1200 and connected it by DVI to my E1705. The display was awesome but I had to install an EZtuner driver for it. Well, it work for a day and the display would show on my laptop screen and the LCD monitor simultaneously. But on the second day of use as I was watching a movie the laptop screen went fuzzy like a badly tuned TV and then it blanked out. Then no more display from it ever! Now I fiddle with the display settings and driver to select multiple monitors and when I see options it only says “single display” – Gateway LCD monitor. The laptop screen option does not display. In Device manager 4 monitors show with their drivers – 3 default displays and 1 Gateway LCD monitor. I tried booting up from both my XP hds and have the same results – no laptop display. And on initial bootup – No Bios bootup message screen shows up cause the laptop screen doesn’t seem to work.

So did my laptop screen or video card get fried? I still get display through DVI. Does anyone here have a similar bad experience by using a Gateway 24” LCD monitor? When it fried my screen was near horizontal, so it slid under the Gateway monitor, - but that shouldn’t affect it.

It would be good if Dell replaced my 7800go with a 7900GS! I got 4 year EPP warranty with Accident Protection!

Anyone else have experiences with their display getting fried?

Using an external monitor should not cause the LCD to become non-functional. I use external sometimes and I've never had a problem. Laying the LCD flat while using the other monitor likewise should not create any problem.

Did you have any display problems before? Any sign that the monitor may be on the way out?

I doubt this is your problem if it's not recognized in the device manager but if you unplug the external monitor does the LCD light up?

If nothing else at lease your system is covered by warranty, but if you're asking if it was something you did...doesn't seem like anything you did should cause this problem.

oh yeah, if you're still getting display on the external and you can play games and stuff your vid card isn't fried.

Unconnected DVI there is no display. I prefer that my video card connection to dispaly is bad so they might upgrade me to a 7900 GS. Or maybe give me the new Vostro laptops coming out! No sign of display faltering before it went out.

Oh, that Gateway monitor is so beautiful! Got it with a speaker bar and the sound is good too! Moniter $574 4 year with Accident warranty $169 from Circuit City. Speaker baqr $69

so if you disconnect the external monitor DVI cable & completely shut down your machine, and then power it back on the internal LCD does not work at all? Even during POST?

FYI, if you have a pic on the 24" it's not the video card so don't expect a video card upgrade.

Yes, unconnected DVI - the LCD is blank during POST

But what if it's the video card's output to laptop screen that's bad? Then new 7900GS!

Or maybe I shoulde wait for the warranty repair until the Vostro laptop comes out. Then if they don't have the parts - they give me a Vostro 1720!

err..ok good luck on that one. Anyways as we return to reality... Does the inverter power up the CCFL? or is is completely unpowered.

There's absolutely no chance at this point you'll be getting a new laptop. Seems like people always start getting in this mood when Dell's about to release new models. They haven't even done one repair to your system and you're expecting a replacement. Dell has replacement parts to last for quite some time after the system is no longer being sold. Hell, I've had fresh parts for six year old laptops come my way before.

And the XPS will still be around, they're about to release the M1330 so who knows at this point what market segment the Vostro will target.

Hello,

Just for kicks, do you have the latest BIOS?

I suppose you used the Function (Fn) key + F8 (CRT/LCD) keys simultaneously to cycle from your:
24" Gateway LCD
17 Dell LCD
24" Gateway LCD and 17Dell LCD

I also have the 24” gateway monitor and connect my Dell Inspiron 9300 via the DVI cable. I always toggle the Fn key + F8 key, so just the Gateway monitor is displaying a picture, the laptop’s display is off.

I have the A08 Bios. The Dell repair tech replaced my LCD and the problem was fixed. Yeah, isn't that Gateway monitor awesome? I'll try that F8 key stuff - never knew about it.
