Here is my final list the price is around $1700 including shipping. As I said before he has monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers and Windows XP Prof.

I am still waiting to hear if the 8800 GTX merits the Xtra $$. And is this all Vista Compatible? and is this memory alright to use with Windows XP or just Vista?

Here is my list:

XFX GeForce 8800/640 GDDR3 SLI PCI Express
Ultra X-Finity 600W pwer supply
OCZ Vista Upgrade Edition Dual Channel 4096MB PC6400 DDR2 800Mz Memory(2x2048)

CP2 Duo-E6600 Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4GHZ 4MB 1066MHZ Conroe Dual Core
EVGA nForce 680i SLI NVIDIA Socket 775 ATX Motherboard
Thermaltake Black Armor Tower
Samsung 18X DVDRDVD Burner with 12XDVDRAM lightscribe teck Black SATA
Corsair C<{SI-620 HX ATX 12V and EPS12V 2.91 620W Power Supply

That's it! I didn't know what to do about the fan? Can someone give me a link to a quiet fan if I need one even though he won't be overclocking.
thanks!
Lynn

You listed the artic cooling freezer 7 pro earlier, it works well and is quiet.

If he is using win xp he may have trouble with 4gb's of RAM, xp pro only can use 3gb of RAM

The graphics card depends on what resolution his LCD monitor has, so if you tell us that we can help you whith what graphics card will work best for the price.

I'm still assuming you are using his old optical drive and hard drives???
Yeah, are you using his hard drive(s)? Also, get back to us on the monitor resolution, then we'll help as best possible. Other than that your build looks fine. Do know that having 4gb of ram in XP will not give him all 4 gigz, only 3.2

The monitor is just a neovo F-419 probably around a 19" regular screen his widescreen is at school.

Yes, I was going to use his old optical and hard drive which is a Wesern Digital/Caviar SE16/500GB 7200/16MB SATA-300 OEM Hard Drive

What should I order to cut the RAM down to 2gb's?
Ok I looked it up and the resolution is 1280-1024, which means the 8800gts 320mb version will work great for your son, if possible you may want to get him a factory over clocked version for a few more frames per second on his gaming.

Pretty much any old PC6400 2x1gb kit will work great. You should spend more than $100 on a 2gb kit of RAM these days. I would get these b/c they are good and aren't expensive.

What RAM does he have now, you may be able to reuse it if it is DDR2.

He has Corsair Two 512 DDR

This is his old computer from High School that I'm upgrading. I'm getting the new Tower (the one he has now the side panel falls off with the slightest touch when I'm cleaning around it). So you think I could use that memory in there in the new one along with the one you suggest?

I'm not understanding what you mean about a factory over clocked version, could you be more specific?
This is an example of a factory OC'd graphics card. The one I posed would be great for your son and much cheaper than a GTX. Also, you cannot mix and match the old ram with the new, they use different slots because of different pin layouts. Furthermore, 2GB's should be perfectly fine for your son. It will improve gameplay greatly

the graphics card pdonket linked to will work great, Evga has a lifetime warranty just make sure you register the card.

Yeah that RAM will not work.......please don't throw out the old pc equipment, give it to a needy person or sell it on the forums.

That looks great Lynn. Do you think he may want a sound card? (sorry for drawing more cost and decision making in). I just recently found that for my 5.1 speakers I'll be getting with my next system I think I should get myself some real surround sound by incorporating a sound card. Just something to think about. Also, not sure if you already have some lying around but you may wanna pick up a new tube of Arctic Silver 5 (thermal paste) while you're there
post #34 of 63
Artic Silver 5 is a good idea, so is a sound card....though I would imagine his old card is still very good and will work just fine.

You switched the E6600 to retail, which means a heatsink and fan will come w/ the E6600 so you don't need the Artic Cooling freezer pro, though I would keep it and use it to keep things quieter and cooler

I forgot about the old computer, I wasn't sure if it had a sound card though. I would also suggest keeping the arctic freezer since it should help your teps

Artic Silver 5 What does this do? I've never bought that product before.
It is the thermal paste that you put on the CPU (E6600 you bought) it lets heat transfer from the CPU to the Heatsink Fan (Artic Cooling freezer pro you bought) It is the most popular thermal paste you can buy and it's only like $5.

ok I'll add that and let the person who is building it know what you said to do with it. I don't think the one I had built last Sept. got any of that when he was building it since I didn't order it. Will this damage that computer?
No the thermal paste won't damage it, Retail CPU's usually come with a pre-applied paste with a plastic film you take off before you stick the heatsink on it.

Heatsink fans usually come with a thermal paste in a tube to use.

Artic Silver 5 is just a brand of thermal paste that seems to do a great job , it will prob lower your CPU temps by 3-5 degrees.
Your other system should be fine without thermal paste. Other than the thermal paste, you should be fine with that set up, I think you're finally ready to order those parts!
