Trying to build a computer for my son: Is This All compatible - Page 3

Thanks so much to the two of you who stuck with me during this process. I know I make things confusing for myself. This is the second year I've ordered my own parts (with a lot of help from people like you two),and had someone else put it together for me. I got sick of paying top dollar for something that I could have bought myself for thousands less.
Thanks to people like you, people like me can save money and give GREAT GIFTS to those young people who really appreciate it. I know my son who is going into his 3rd year of college loves to game during his spare time, and he does not have a lot of spare time, sometimes he goes MONTHS without a subscription online. He's in an immersion Japanese program this summer for international law (so no English speaking at all for him),So when he does get the chance I like to see him enjoy.

Thanks Again, I really appreciate your help!
Lynn

pdonket...thanks for the compliment on me being a great mom, I do try my hardest, I love being a MOM!

No problem It's really great to see moms actually caring about their kids and thinking of what they would want. My town bas sort of turned into this snobby rich town and most of the moms around here go way beyond whats the right way to go. They spoil their children, but it's not even like they get it to surprise their kids, they just take them shopping for everything just to get the kids out of the way it seems. I mean, some girl just the other day got a brand new BMW 3 series for her 16th birthday....in NY you can't even drive until you're 16 and a half so it's just so stupid.

Anyway, enough ranting if you want, post some pictures of it completed! I'm sure I speak for both of us when we say that we love seeing custom systems :]

Before I order I just wanted to get your opinion on these 2 products. It's only $70 more (because of a rebate) for the 8800 640 MB than the one I was going to order, is there a big difference?

EVGA 320-P2-N815-AR GeForce 8800GTS 320MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Video Card - Retail $299.99

EVGA 640-P2-N821-AR GeForce 8800GTS 640MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Video Card - Retail $369.00

if your son plans on getting a bigger LCD monitor with a higher resolution then the 640mb will be the better choice.

if he sticks with the 1280x1024 then the 320mb is the better choice.

The extra video ram (320 vs. 640) only makes a difference if you are using a higher resolution screen such as 1680x1020.

I ordered from Newegg yesterday, they already shipped it, called the guy to put it together and he said he'd come over and have it done same day. He usually charges $50, is that the going rate for work like this? It sounds inexpensive to me.

50$ is an extreme bargain. I personally think it's part of the fun to put it together myself, but I could see in general not wanting to have to do that if you don't know a whole lot about it. I think around here a place would charge maybe $300 to put the parts together (i live in a rich sorta town) but still.

I thought it was quite a bargain last year and when he said he charges the same I was surprised.

The post by Riddic LS1...is he saying the fan is not compatible?

If you have a chance please direct me on how to post a picture. I have a digital of the one I ordered and had built last year if you want me to post that while I'm waiting for this one to be built. The screen/speakers are nicer on the one last year, this year it was budget!

Don't worry about riddic's post anymore, you've since changed the heatsink for your system so that it will work on your system

As for the picture, you're going to have to host the image on a website. What I do is host it on www.photobucket.com which you just register freely on. Then you find the photo with their upload tool on your computer and once you upload it, there will be a URL provided to copy under the image. Then once here, if in the advanced reply mode, on the top of the "Message:" box, there is an image with a couple mountains, a yellow sky and a moon/sun. Click on that and paste your URL into there

I just wanted to say that you people on here are the BEST! For the second year in a row you have guided me in building two great computers. I'm going to work on posting pics of both, but first there is just one more thing.

With this computer I'm just not happy with the monitor compared with the one I built last year it just isn't great. I only got the 880gts 320mb video card because I was sure that I wasn't going to buy another monitor, but now I would like a 20"widescreen.

I bought an Acer AL2016W last year with the 7950extreme video card and it looks great. This time I was trying to save some $$ and figured I'd just use the old neovo F-419 probably around a 19", so I'm not sure if I made a mistake on the 880 GTS(320) video card this year, I should of went with the 640 what monitor do you think I should get? I hope it's not to late to improve to a widescreen.

Thanks,
Lynn

Alright, technically you should've gone with the 640mb version, but to be perfectly honest...the 320mb version is still plenty fast. It has more vram and better technology than my current laptop card, and my laptop's card at 1680x1020 (recommended place for the 640mb version of the card) and it runs every game currently out with the exception of oblivion on the highest settings there are. So you should be fine with your graphics card.

Now, for the monitor. If you have freedom to spend money as you wish....I would suggest buying a 2007WFP monitor from Dell. Dell provides some of the best monitors for the price but they aren't "cheap". They are $399 and I bought myself one last x-mas and for the past 7 months I've been nothing but happy with it. You could also buy another Acer 20" monitor if you'd like, no problem with that.

Another cheaper alternative would be this : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824005085

Looks like a great monitor to me, and LG is a good manufacturer. Best of luck!

I took your advice and ordered the 2007WFP monitor from Dell.

Do you think I should hook it up to the computer I just built or would it be better with the computer I built last year with the GEForce 7950 GX2 520M Extreme?

Thanks for your suggestion pdonket

No problem

On both systems the monitor will work great for you. I think you'll love the monitor, and the good part is that when you order from dell, if you don't like it within the first couple days, just send it back to Dell and they'll give you a full refund (minus the shipping). At least that's how it works with systems! I would think the 2007WFP monitor would look better than the Acer, but I'm not sure seeing as I don't own both. So it's up to you

I personally have the 8800 GTS 320 powering a HPw2207 monitor (22" widescreen) and it is PLENTY fast for anything I can throw at it. You did not make a mistake if a widescreen is your only worry. In 2 years or so the 320 MB version may be hit by the LATEST and GREATEST games at max settings, but then you can always slap another new card in with $200 still sitting in savings from the original purchase.

Thanks for the reassurance! I was so hesitant buying the 320, but I didn't want to spend as much as I did last year building a computer. Wow 22" widescreen that must look very nice!

Thanks again for all the recommendations Pdonket, I'll let my son decide which monitor goes where LOL I can't wait to see the new monitor. Once I get it do I just unhook the old monitor and put the new one in or do I have to install something?

Dell will provide a driver CD of which I'm unsure what is used for. You will just unplug it from your system and then pop the new one on, it should work off the bad. Also, you'll have to tweak monitor settings depending on whether you hook it up via DVI (white connectors) or VGA (blue connectors). But the instructions will tell you exactly what to do.

I think your son will love to see all he is getting

I hooked this monitor up with the blue connector into a white connector that was already connected to the back of the case from the last monitor. On the screen it shows me that little blue connector in the upper left corner when I turned it on. Am I supposed to do something else?

I'm so excited! It's a very nice monitor and slides up and down, back and forth so easily, I've never seen a monitor like it before!

That's all you really have to do Also, somewhere on the monitor there is a menu button that can bring up your brightness and little tools that you may enjoy customizing to your tastes. As for connections, that's all that you need to do! I assume it's displaying from the PC just fine, right? Also, if you haven't set it to 1680x1050 in terms of pixels, do that because it certainly makes the screen even more beautiful.

What kind of keyboard and mouse do you all use?

I went witht he logitech mediaelite and the mx518 mouse the last time and he loves it.

I want to get somthing for this new computer do you prefer anything else?

I took a pic of this new computer to post, The Dell monitor looks fantastic!

Should I post the pic with the monitor off or on?
I would possibly suggest the G7 wireless gaming mouse, and as for the keyboard...the Saitek eclipse. Those are just my favorites though

Also, you can take a pic with or without the monitor on, maybe both
