dell laptop burns slow as @#$!

Thread Starter
so i restored my dell image since it didnt come with a cd to reformat...

everything was fine until i started to copy some dvds again...the laptop takes roughly 60-75 to copy a dvd!

it is not the media. i checked the dma settings on my hard drive. for the primary it is set to dma if available. for the secondary it is dma if available, but the transfer is in PIO mode. can this be the issue?

also, i tried to install or reinstall the drivers for the dvd drive but all the ones on the dell site dont work for me...this is the drive sony dvd+rw dw-q58a

what can the issue be....

thanks.

PIO is definately your problem. There is a fix in this thread:

Problems with the IDE PIO DMA settings.
You shoukd upgrade the drive with the latest firmware UDS2 from DELL.

Hello,
My name is Rick and I am a Dell Customer Advocate. The above mentioned solutions should resolve your issue, but if that doesn't work you might want to try seeing if you have any burning software running that might be interfering with the DMA settings, I have seen on a couple occasions where burning software (like Nero or Sonic) can sometimes force drives into PIO mode. Usually reinstalling such applications will resolve the issue if firmware doesn't work.
