USB system not functioning in 9200-

Howdy,

I just built a 9200 for my wife out of parts from Ebay.
The motherboard was sold with the disclosure that the USB ports were inoperable, but it was a steal, so I went ahead with the sale. The seller, a parts dealer, threw in a PCMCIA USB card.

So I've successfully built the laptop, and all is well with it, aside of course of the non-functioning USB. I was hoping that maybe this was a driver issue, and not a toasted USB chip (or whatever gets fried). When I plug in an external USB HDD, the indicator light shows it's getting juice, but there's no sign of it being read, nor does it show up in any menues.

However, when I plug in the PCMCIA USB, the laptop aknowledges that it's there, and what it is, but when I plug in the external USB HDD to the USB card, I get thye same result as before.

The PCMCIA slot does work, as it reads my CF card adapter just fine. And there's nothing wrong with the HDD enclosure. The OS is a fresh install on a fairly new hard drive. The BIOS is the updated version (there are only two for the 9200).

I've searched here and the web, and only found some info about Ipods killing the USB systems on T4 Thinkpads. But I've found very little on this issue overall.

Thanks for looking.

You could always see if your usb's were operational outside of windows, say in dos or linux. Make a bootable flash drive if you prefer dos.

I have come across a few situations where the powered USB port on a laptop has died, in some cases there is a SMT Fuse involved.

If the USB device does not require a powered port it may still work.

In this case it sounds like the USB Chip has crapped and in that case your SOL.

As far as the PCMCIA USB Device it maybe a limitation of Power available for the USB Device in this case the External HDD

Try a USB mouse and see if it works.

Good Luck
