Argh @ Apple

I ordered a MacBook Pro last month, and it came in about two weeks ago. The new notebook is very nice, but after hearing about the new Santa Rosas recently released, I nearly doubled-over in anguish!

I was wondering if anyone knows whether it's possible to update my notebook with the new high-res display. I'm extremely frustrated, because my old notebook had a better display then the one on my MBP, and the moment after I purchase it Apple decides to release a comparable one without letting anyone know. [edit out]

Also, can I get my hard drive upgraded to the new 160GB 7200RPM drives at the Apple Store? Again... my old notebook had the same amount of space, but it wasn't available when I purchased my MBP... until now.

if it just came in can't you return it, then order the newer version?

Take it into an Apple Store, calmly explain the situation, try to leave out the part where you feel conned... I can't think of any company off hand that will put up a big sign on their website that reads "You know what? Don't bother ordering that laptop now, we are releasing a slightly shinier version in just a few weeks" I think you might still be in the timeframe... you can probably take it in, pay a restock fee and walk out with a new one at the same price level.

Just explain the situation reasonably and they might be able to help you

you bought what you wanted when you got it, or you wouldnt have purchased it right?

now if you want the new stuff, try to go get it. but be warned, there may be a restocking fee, they may say "no", and above all, YOU DID GET WHAT YOU PAID FOR.

not much argument for you if they say no im afraid, you bought it, you got it!

I got what I paid for, I agree with that. It's just that I've been waiting for the SRs for so long, and up until the day I purchased my MBP there was no word of a release date, no industry news, nothing. Then right after I get mine in, Apple turns around and releases the newer one, the one I've been waiting for... bah. I can't return it because I purchased it online last month, and it took two weeks to arrive, which puts me out of the return policy timeframe.

[edit] I know what you're going to say, "you should have waited longer," but my last notebook died and I needed a new one for work.

yeah your situation sucks but thats life, put yours up for sale and buy the new MBP if you want it that bad.

It can always be said that "you should have waited longer", but you buy it when you buy it. There is always something better around the corner. My buddy and I both bought our MacBooks about a month before the Core2 Duos showed up. So, it happens, but hey, you still have a pretty powerful system there.

Yeah, I'll just have to put the MBP to good use and earn more money for the next one that comes out. Thanks for your responses guys, I guess I just needed to vent.

I am guessing you mean the glossy screens. They are much nicer imo. If you can exchange it then I would definitely go for it.

You have 14 days to return an old model for a replacement with a new model.

Anything longer than that and you better be one of those people who can cell ice to Eskimos.

I wanted the new UXGA+ screen, since that's the resolution I'm used to working in. And the glossy displays are nice, but I don't use them because I do graphic work.

BTW, I called both my local Apple store and the national tech support line, and both representatives told me that if I upgrade my hard drive it will void my warranty, whether it's performed by an authorized service center or not.

I only have 5GB of space left on my internal drive, so now I'm in the market for an external bus-powered firewire 800 7200RPM 100GB+ drive, which is near impossible to find. I was thinking about getting a ComboGB enclosure with a 200GB Travelstar 7K200, but nobody is selling the drive... I'll probably just buy a G-RAID Mini at this point.

Bullshit...especially if an authorised service centre upgrades it.

Their policy has always been that you can upgrade your computer but if you break something your warranty is void.

I haven't heard of any changes to the policy.

Apple customer service is excellent. I understand your situation. I would suggest that you take your laptop with everything that came with it along with a proof of the delivery date to Apple store. Talk to the manager. Be Calm, polite, use people skills when you talk and calmly explain your concern. I am pretty sure you can walk out with a new system.

I kid you not, that's what they told me. I think it must have something to do with the fact that the MBPs have tons of screws, unlike regular MBs.

I'm resigned to my fate, but I really need more hard drive space. FYI I purchased the G-RAID mini, so when it comes in I'll let you guys know how it is.

Ok, I see what you mean about the difference in screw count. I have to remove 3 to get at my RAM and HDD... but I have always heard the same as Kakaze, replace what you want, just don't break anything, and of course, anything you put in is not covered by warranty. Maybe that is what they meant. So if you replace the hard drive, your new hard drive isn't covered, but the old one still is (if it ever was).

But o man, you want to talk removing screws? When I replaced the keyboard/trakpad/power button topcase thing on my macbook, I had to remove something like 20 screws, maybe 25.

why don't apple redesign the MBP so we can replace HD like the MB? grrrrrrrrr

That's what I thought too, so I asked the rep about it, and she said that replacing the hard drive will void everything.

Oh yeah, I got my G-RAID mini in the other day... fast...
