first deal is a joke

It's actually a pretty good deal.

You can get an XPS 410 for about $1550 with

E6420
2gb ram
320gb HD
8800GTX

Sounds pretty beastly for the price to me.

what a shame though, you have to run the CPU at stock, RAM is 667mhz also

But for non-DIY'ers I guess it is a good route to go.

For a DIY'er, buying any prebuilt is a bad way to go, with the exception of laptops.

I guess for me at least, I enjoy spending a bit more extra, to know that I only have to call 1 phone number if I have a problem, and I don't have to diagnose the problem by swapping around parts and stuff.

I guess I also see overclocking and ram speeds as a bit of an over-reaction. The E6420 at stock speeds will still scream through tasks you throw at it, and 667mhz ram will burn it up as well. In my opinion, some expenses aren't justified. Of course having the CPU unlocked would be nice, but isn't necessary. Having 800mhz ram would be nice, but not necessary Thats my take.

yeah right now the E6420 will be fast at stock but what about in 2 years when you don't want to spend another $1500 and you can't keep up.....being able to o/c to 3.3Ghz would def be a plus. *this only really matters if your poor like me and can't upgrade every year

I know where you're coming from. I'm not rich so even though I do indulge occasionally, I try to retain a long system life. Btw, when you build yourself, how often have you had things break down? It seems really easy after looking around a bit and I think I'd love to try (considering it's dirt cheap to DIY)

I'm not a big DIY'er (by this I mean I only have one desktop, other ppl. have multiple which makes it easy to swap parts when there is a problem) So that is the major down side, not having spare parts. I haven't had a problem yet and most retail version parts come w/ good warranties (Evga gpu cards are lifetime, most HD's are 5 years, CPU's are like 3 years) So yeah your still covered it is just more work b/c you have to register everyting and keep reciepts.

I really just like picking all the parts and not using OEM parts that I know nothing about. And as you said being able to pick my own upgrade path....even though at times the path chosen dies off.

Also I think pc hardware forums, [H] to be specific have better tech support and info than any OEM company can offer.

True, especially a community like that where there are tons of people to help so that you can get a response within hours. Another question is how does it work when you call the company of the product you buy (or email them)? Do you just basically tell them that you've tested and found that the GPU is fried, or will they make you troubleshoot with them first?
I'm not sure what they do, I know usually they just send you and RMA label for shipping and you send it to them and they send you a working product (usually a refurb) I know evga allows for oc'ing, watercooling and aftermarket coolers and still covers the card with their full warranty.

Every company has their own procedures for RMA'ing.

Cool, I'll definitely look into it

thanks for the notice...

I'm really displeased with dell's deals lately. I bought my i9300 in November of 2005 absolutely loaded for $1300 and I haven't seen a newer computer that I would like to have from dell yet that is in my price range. Dell used to have all of these $500+/30% off coupons that you could stack with other coupons, but I don't know where they've gone. I'm ready for buy a new laptop and I haven't seen any good deals lately.

so aparently the days of deals is still available through Dell Home but either they decided that adding the EPP discount to it was too much or the EPP version of the promo was a mistake. I'll change the link in the first post.
