Official news on the new M1720

Hey folks,

I just got of the phone earlier with Dell because the replacement motherboard they sent me had soda on it . Not to mention the chips near the headphone jacks were all corroded and stuff...

Well in my mission on getting a replacement, I found out the guy (Dellguy1) I was talking to used to work for the same company as I did. Well I asked him a few questions and here is what I got out of him:

1. He finished the "new generation" training last Friday.
2. The new flagship will be called the XPS 1720. Not sure if they are using the "M"...
3. It is Santa Rosa based. Duhhh...
4. THEY HAVE THE GO 8800GTX IN HOUSE AND READY. THIS IS CONFIRMED.
5. He did not give me clocks or memory size. He couldn't cause "big brother " may be listening.. lmao!!!
6. Oh did I mention they HAVE the 8800GTX....
7. 8800GTX...
8. It is due to release in July
9. It is BIGGER than the m1710 and looks different..
10. Dell would not let anyone crack the case so no word on Vcard compatability with the M1710. But my guess would be if you swap heatsinks, you may be game..... He said the back video ports are set up the same...
11. It will support 4GB ram
12. He physically touched the unit (good news!!!)
13. He was wondering what has stopped Dell, but they are overdue to announce it.... by a week or 2 now. In fact his manager was searching for a copy of the advertisement....
14. Oh did I say advertisement...

Anyway, you can all take a cold shower now and start selling off your kids for this beast...

-Abadee, your new best friend...

I'm taking this with a grain of salt (a favorite phrase of the people here). But I have to admit, you have gotten me excited .

Really exciting news if you're right.

Oh I remember this guy from when I was at Microage. He had the same job as me in Arizona when I was up in Oregon and I had talked to him many times in the past and didn't know it. It took 1 1/2 hours to do a 30-45 min call remembering stuff about the old days...

If it was true, wouldn't we see something on nvidia site about the GTX card? It would be great though if it was true.

Selling 9300 next week....
That will help about 1/5 of the new XPS price if it gets here lol.

Just remember your roots guys... Nvidia did not announce the MR9800 card in the Gen1 until Dell released it...

Another post from someone working in the dell tech support center:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/show...127503&page=17
1720 will be released without 8800, but will be compatible with it.
1721(AMD) will have only integrated graphic card option.
It will be interesting how they will cool a 8800 or better with a single fan and exhaust out the side on the 1720 if the french pictures are correct, maybe the next XPS 17" will have a slightly different case from the inspiron...
No DVI or HDMI, oh man, what a deal breaker for me!
Lets be careful. I think some info on the new inspirons is getting mixed with the rumors of a new XPS M1720.
Still no damned eSATA port. >.<

Seriously - doesn't the goddamned Santa Rosa chipset support more than two SATA ports? It HAS to.
Yeah, there's gotta be something more for the XPS. At least I hope so. I just looked at the 1720 on the lesdellions web site-- 1) Speakers on the bottom???? Duhhhh.. you'll get great sound out of that. Somebody give the designer a gold star sticker on his thick forehead. Subwoofer gone? 2) No DVI port. Odd move going backwards like that especially considering more and more LCDs are digital now. 3) All those ports coming out of the right side-- right where I use my mouse 4) Less airflow than the current XPS M1710/9400 - You're not going to get an 8800m GTX in there without a few more exhaust holes. The guy (syn0s) on Notebook review who saw the 1720 talked about how the whole thing was very modular -- http://forum.notebookreview.com/show...127503&page=17
Quote:
They ARE a little thicker than previous models, but they are very modular in design. Everything, even down to the USB ports, are connected via cable to the mainboard, and have separate "modules" or circuit boards. So if the USB port goes out, for example, they just try and replace the USB port circuit board instead of the ENTIRE mainboard.
So here's hoping there's the possibility of modular HDMI, eSATA, and DVI ports on the next XPS.
I"m wondering what the Vostro line is? It's gotta be something different, otherwise they'd release it on the same day instead of being 2 weeks apart. Crossing my fingers that the XPS and especially M lines will have some sort of docking solution or DVI/HDMI.

I don't think the modular thing works as you suggest. The chassis don't look like they have any cutouts to fit anything else e.g. DVI/HMDI/eSata.

No, they don't. All the rest of the "details" are trivial.

But you're not, so what's the deal on that? You gonna get all of us a new one "MUAHAHAHAAAA!!!"
The new inspirons are going to use the number 1720 for the intel version. I find it difficult to believe that they're going to use the same number scheme for the inspiron as the XPS. Especially considering they've always given the two lines different model numbers (probably mainly a marketing concern) and I doubt that now all the sudden they're deciding to change that.

those look more like Sagers or Alienware laptops.. with the wedge shape
