Official news on the new M1720 - Page 4

July would be nice. Very nice indeed. But that's just the beginning of Q3--we could very well go until September without seeing anything new. (Which would make me cry.)

Also, since ATI has yet to release the mobile 2900, would Nvidia be timing their 8800M release around that?

As exciting as all these rumors are, I'm afraid they are only rumors--who knows if they tech guys aren't just messing with us because they know we want this new beast so badly?

Also, does anyone have even a wild guess what kind of price range we're looking at? I tried pricing HP's (probably not the best comparison, but oh well), and the old Centrino + GeForce Go 7600 was about $300 less than the new Centrino Santa Rosa + GeForce 8600M. That's probably low, but I have no idea what it could be for real..

I just got off an online chat with a Dell XPS rep. He had nothing to say about a revision/refresh of the XPS M1710. I did not specifically ask about it though, just said that I was waiting for a DX10 card to make my purchase. He threw a discout at me trying to get me to order tonight, I told him if I couldn't upgrade to a DX10 card later on, it wasn't worth it to me.

I don't think that this really proves anything. The guy might full well have known about the XPS M1720 but not been free to say, or Dell might be trying to sell as many of the M1710's as possible bofore they come clean about the M1720.

Or we are just chasing baseless rumors here and there really is no M1720 coming. Now that's a depressing thought.

Wow, nice find. Talking just about the looks, I don't think the new look is that much of a big deal over the old one. Still, it's nice to finally see something different.

I'm not impressed at all over the results, but it is a 8600 after all
post #65 of 92
If those benchmarks are for real,it is pretty disappointing, the 15.4 " asus G1s scores more than a 1000 more points in 06 at the same res,I bet Dell are going to use cheaper DDR2 graphics memory on their 8600M GT It really makes you wonder what BS they will come up with to try and market to current 1705 7900GS owners

I can't wait until the 26th to see if dell is REALLY going to release a new line of notebooks with no DVI,e-sata,HDMI,lightscribe burners, that are thicker and heavier than the models they replace

Here is another link I found with some small thumbnails of the new models and some more info:

I'm getting confused. Is this thread about the new inspirons (1420, 1520, 1720) or about a rumored XPS M1720? Dell has all but officially confirmed the new inspirons, but a new XPS 17" is still only speculation. We know there is an Inspiron 1720, but we want news about an XPS 1720.

The info I originally spoke of was for the new XPS model which is what this thread was supposed to revolve around. Dell has now released info on the Inspirons...

So what's this I hear about 1440x900 max and the Geforce 8600 256MB (only available on the intel, the AMD sucks even more?)
I am definitely feeling th e-peen in here... Apparently at least one member is taking a double dose of Viagra... I have lots of certs too... That doesn't mean your information is correct. Boasting about Mensa & pertcentiles... Now that makes it a triple dose of Viagra for the e-peen...

If you think that the 8800m is already manufactured & in house, well that is your own pipe dream. You might want to check the air around you to make sure it's not getting to thin lol... they are not going to release the 8800M in July. It's not feasible.

By the way, that reminds me: The title of this thread is wildly inappropriate and misleading, too: Some dude working the phones at Dell peddling rumors is certainly not quite the same as "official news"...

No idea what it is that "you hear", but if you take the trouble to read the two threads on this topic, you should be able to figure it out. If you don't feel like reading, maybe you can find someone who will read them for you, but it ain't me...

when this thread came up my browser didn't load the entire thread, just the first post. so be quiet little man!

Haha, I love when new technology is scheduled...

Looks like Sager rolled out their santa rosa line up already. I breifly checked and highest GPU is still 7950GTX or 8600M. I wouldn't be suprised if Dell does the same thing.

Why not? When will they release it, then, does ANYBODY know/have a clue/have a good guess? I wonder what the hold-up is ffs...the last cards were popping out every 12 months, at least! Is this card so troublesome that no company (not even Dell) can get it to bloody work in a laptop, even after many months of fiddling around? I mean, nvidia has sure dropped the ball, here, if that's the case...they were previously releasing the new iterations as a whole group, with immediate availability of desktop and laptop versions...the 7900 (if I'm remembering right) was available almost the week after announcement...at this rate, Nvidia will have a whole new line of DX10 cards to market before Dell even figures out how to get the 8xxx series in a product!
well this is dx9 -> dx10....now if you really want to discuss dropping the ball, you need to talk to ati

3 words die shrink required
Right. Yup, got that; however, the die has shrunk already and the cards are assembled and in the hands of OEM's, right? Who are just trying to futz them into a laptop with decent thermals...the lead time on nvidia's manufacturing of the card is no longer an issue, I think..I mean, if they still have yet to upgrade their factory and stamp the silicon, we won't see this until next year, right? Also, I'd be curious to find the die-size for the desktop cards, but I'm too tired to Google it tonight.

Anyhow, I'm just anxious to get my hands on the new Dell before Crysis, Hellgate, etc. etc. are released.

Oh, and slightly off-topic: Your system is monstrously cool. I read your review, which is excellent. If the 8800 is really THAT far-off or overrated as you suggest in that monograph, would I be able to get a boost out of my 1710 with the overclockable processor that would be worth it? Or would the 7950 increase my gaming power more? I'm reasonably good at overclocking, so I assume I could match your numbers, and I currently only score ~9500 in 3dmark05 (card is at 600/700, standard 1710 otherwise as noted in sig). I'm guessing I should just wait, but if we're looking at only a small boost in gaming speed from the 8800 or else a ~4-6 month wait for it, I feel like I should upgrade this puppy quick to get the full benefit a s soon as possible...thanks! You can PM me an answer to this last part, if you want, since it is somewhat OT.

The dye shrink hasn't happened yet, because there's no need for it. Nvidia's smart... they're not making vid cards to top themselves off. The 8800 gtx/ultra is king of all, uncontested. Why would they make a die shrinked 8900? There's no rush, ATI doesn't have anything yet. ATI has not delivered a good competitor card, so they're the ones scrambling to develop something.

The 8600 and 8700 cards for the laptop segment really are the cheapest current solution for DX10, which is the big selling point. I can't say anything about them b/c I don't own either a desktop or mobile version, but desktop versions aren't quite as good in games as a 7900 series card.

We can sit all day and speculate about an 8800 or 8900 card, but the bottom line is this: if the card parallels performance from desktop cards, it will be a big step forward. But, let's not forget: a 7950 with 512 mb RAM and a good 2.0+ ghz processor will have no problems running games for a good while at high resolution and image quality.
