Pavilion dv5000 startup issues

Thread Starter
My friend obtained a HP Pavilion DV5000 notebook yesterday. The company she works for had it for about a year when it developed a problem. It appears to have been dropped since there are signs on the notebook, especially near the front of the notebook.

Since the notebook is out of warranty especially if it was dropped, there was no need to keep the notebook. My friend said she would dispove of it, well actually see if I could repair it.

I started the notebook up, it would start but the screen wouldn't display anything. The HDD led indicator was active. To turn off the notebook I have to disconnect the battery, pressing and holding the power button would not turn off the notebook.

The first thing after I unplugged the battery was hook up the notebook to an external monitor. I started up the notebook without any success. Nothing would display on either the built in monitor or the external monitor hooked up. Since it was dropped I needed to determine if there was internal damage to the notebook.

I downloaded the Maintenance and Service Guide for a pavilion dv5000 notebook from HP to ensure I disassemble the notebook correctly and so I would be able to reassemble it later. After taking the keyboard off I noticed that the cabling to the monitor was a little loose. I should have reattached it fully and run a test but since I couldn't get anything to display on the second monitor the loose connection shouldn't be the problem. After taking the notebook apart I was able to get a close look at the motherboard. I can see nothing wrong, there is no damage to the mainboard that I can see visially. I noticed a metal fragment located under the tape right between the VGA and S-Video ports on the top side.

Also on the side of the motherboard where the CPU cooler I see some damge to to some casing located near the cpu cooler and VGA port. I think that is where the metal fragments came from since there is fatigue on the exterior where the Notebook lock goes.

I can't see anything wrong with the motherboard and everything checks out visually. Im about to reassemble the notebook. I have to figure that the notebook will start back up but the same problems will probably be still there. Im hopeing someone who knows about notebook servicing/troubleshooting especially about HP Pavilion DV5000 notebooks might know what problem this notebook is having.

It's original destination was recycling so if I can't fix it, that is where it will still end up.

i have seen this being a common issue with these. i believe its an issue with the design of that cage around the heatsink. i would first try removing one stick of ram and tryin to power it up like that and see if it posts. if it doesnt work, take that same stick of ram and try the other slot. do the same for the other stick of ram if it did not work with the first one.

what cpu is your dv5000? the amd turion 64 or centrino duo core?
