Dell XPS Gen1 CPU Upgrade

Thread Starter
I have a Gen 1 xps with a 3.4 GHZ chip atm. My question is can that mobo support an upgrade to a faster chip, like a dual core E6600 or something like that. My other question is will it be able to handle the almost certain heat increase?

Thankx in advance

This link has the system specifications of the XPS Gen1:

including the CPU options.

No you can't upgrade to duo's. Your only choice on CPU is Extreme edition. You should remember if you got the system yourself from Dell which I think only had 2 options on CPU's. I think only difference on the CPU between yours and Extreme edition was 512KB(yours) Cache and 2MB Cache (Extreme).

The Extreme Edition was also a Xeon core in socket 478 packaging as opposed to the other 3.4Ghz processor which had a Prescott core.

Unfortunately upgrading to the Extreme Edition isn't worth it either. Sell your XPS, get what you can from it, and buy something new.

Thankx for the replies. I have a better desktop, just need this XPS to handle some general light gaming, (DAOC bot pc primarily) So it will do the trick for now.

I have one more interesting follow up question... Could I take out that Prescott 3.4 out of my XPS and put it into a desktop machine? I have an Optiplex GX280 with a P4 3.2 Prescott that i want to possibly swap the CPU's on.

Yes it will work. Though u wouldnt see much of a performance gain... other than getting it warmer and toastier :-P

Your lappy would maybe run a little cooler with the 3.2GHz in there compared to the 3.4 in there now.
