Service Tag

Thread Starter
i was trying to install an antivirus (trend-pc-cillen) software the other day, and it says that it could not install because it needed that the computer be a dell computer. now, my computer is a dell computer, and so i went online and checked my service tag on dell. it says that is could not find my service tag or express service tag when it scanned my computer. prior to this my computer was working fine. but, when i check int eh BIOS (F2 at boot), the service tag no. is the same as externally found n my computer. as my computer is abt 1 yr old, i can not ask dell for support without giving abt a $100. all i want to do is recover the existing serivce tag. i am using a xps m140.

also, can u tell what are the problem to not having a service tag identifiable(as in leaving the computer as is ) but not totally wiped off the BIOS?

i have read that i could use a program called asset.com and svrtag.exe, but am unsure of how to use and if this is the correct circumstances to use in.

i would greatly appreciate any help
thanxs

Well if your BIOS is displaying the same tag as your label then theres no issue there. As to why Trend PC cant detect your bios well I have no idea how long is your subscription for the software for? If you have time left on it you should be able to get support on it from trend micro. the srvtag program would really do you no good since you already have a service tag associated to the system.

You can try resetting it with the asset.com utility. Just make an MS-DOS boot disk if you have a USB floppy. Setting it up on a bootable CD is a bit more complicated. If you have a resource CD for your computer I BELEIVE it's located in \CSD\Tools\BIOS What'd you want to do is boot from the resource CD and go to a DOS prompt rather than diagonostics. Then you would type at the prompt:

C:\>[this is the prompt]
C:\>cd csd\tools\bios
C:\CSD\TOOLS\BIOS>asset /s XXXXXXX (the X's being your service tag)

Sometimes asset.com is actually asset209.com so if one doesn't work try the other.

as for my subscription that is still for a few more months, but trend pc-cillen said to contacct dell, and they would not help bcos warrenty is over. also, the dell site does not recognize my service tag no. as being on my computer-it is not just the av software.

i do not have a floppy, so the best way is a botable cd or resource disk. i guess i do not know that much abt computers, and i lost what u were saying abt the resource disk. What is the resource disk, and where and how do u locate \\CSD\\Tools\\BIOS? how do u know if u have a resource cd? i understand the dos prompt, but kindly confirm that u get to the dos prompt but hitting F8 during boot of computer. as for setting it up on a bootable disk would that be the procedure if i do not have a resource disk? if so, is there a procedure for that? i am sorry for all of the trouble. thanking u and awaiting ur reply.

Do you know how to burn an iso image file to a CD-R? I'm just for the moment going to assume you can do that with your burning software of choice.

Download This image file that I made for you.

Burn it to a CD-R.

Once you have it on CD you'll need to reboot your computer with the disc in the drive. Press F12 at the Dell startup screen. Select "Onboard or USB CDROM drive" as your boot device. Shortly afterward your screen will have this:

A:\>

That is a DOS prompt. All you have to do after that is type:

asset.com /s XXXXXXX

The X's being where your service tag goes. Press enter after typing the command. The Utility should then show your Service tag and Asset tag info from BIOS (most systems don't have Asset or owner tags set so it's normal for those to be blank). Then all you need to do is reboot and you should be set.

i frogot to ask this in the last post. bcos my service tag is still in teh BIOS(when i click F2 i see it) and just can not be found on the computer will the above procedure account for that? bcos i have read that this asset.com program can only be run once to reset the service tag, just want to make sure.

thanxs again

You can run it as many times as you want. Often times when I replace the motherboard on a desktop the board has a service tag already on it, it's just the wrong one.

I'd say go ahead and run asset.com just to make sure. It won't hurt anything to overwrite your current tag.

Oh, it might warn you that that version of asset.com is not for your system. Ignore it, it works with any Dell machine.

Hello, This is Richard from Dell's Online Community Outreach. The only reason you would have an issue with the service tag not being listed is if it is a non-US system. Please private message your service tag to me and I will try to find out what is going on. Better yet if you have the original invoice, look for the order number and the customer number. With those numbers I would be able to access the service tag and make sure what you think it is (what is in the bios) matches up. I look forward to your response. Hey thanks for resurrecting an old thread with your post that doesn't contribute to the discussion WHATSOEVER. The OP PAID for a subscription to PC-Cillin and wants to get his money's worth. Changing Antivirus software does not make sense.

Thanks for playing, and pay attention to the dates in the future.

In case you were wondering, most of that was sarcastic because I'm just that mean.
