Should I Wait to Buy a Laptop?

I don't really keep up with laptop tech, but I am going off to school in the fall, so I will be in the market for one soon. Are there any advancements coming out in the next few months that will lower current gen prices and/or just make for better laptops?

Also are there any recommended brands for college students? I will probably go for more of a business pc for the durability (thinkpad, lattitude)- anyone have other recommendations?

Thanks

well it seems that gaming won't be happening w/ this notebook so I would try to get a bus. oriented notebook w/ Santa Rosa.........nothing really huge is coming out before your fall semester that will matter to you.

(the 8700gt was just announced and 8800 should arrive later this year but if you aren't gaming that don't matter.)

some things worth noting:

budget: NO more than $1500- I don't really know if this is realistic

Uses:
internet
word processing
email
music software- Finale- I'm music ed.
light photoshop
light gaming (aoe2)--emphasis on light, however-
-if I can, I'd like to try to play some newer games on lower settings such as Oblivion and F.E.A.R, CS, etc.

ok well that changes it them, I would try to get a notebook w/ Santa Rosa and an 8600gs for graphics in a 15.4" notebook.

look for the ASUS S96S, Compal IFL90, that is all I know of right now that will fit your purpose and both can be had for less than $1500

If you want something different you can go w/ last gen mid-range gpu's (x1600, x1700, 7600 and 7700) But I would stay away from them if you plan on keeping the notebook for an extended period of time (2 or more years)

I would wait at least a month as santa rosa laptops are just starting to come out. I agree with mitcity though, a 15.4" with a 8600 would be perfect for you. I'm not sure when the new Inspirons are coming out but the E1520 might be a good option for you with some good coupons.

The best way to describe waiting on buying a laptop (or any computer hardware) is like buying a car. The minute you drive it off the lot, the value of the vehicle drops massively. It is the same way with a laptop, you can wait and wait to buy a laptop hoping to get the best deal when if you wait for that deal then you pretty much are just going to buy a outdated laptop anyway.

I agree serox, now is the time to buy and as long as he gets SR and an 8600 gpu, he'll be fine. The new dells do look good though and if I was going to buy a new dell I would def wait for the refresh, for the new hardware and the new look.

You can wait for new line of Dell lappys, or go to Ebay for cheap M90's.

I paid spec on my sig for 1450 shipped, and was brand new. Price on Dell small business is around 2700 not including taxes.

Make sure to search for one with 2500M (512ram) card, and good feed back, and prior M90 sales.
