According to this article, the Vostro suck major.

Check out the link. Best video card of 8600 sucks. But it says the screen only goes up to 1440 x 900! I get Dell's only because they have the most powerful video cards and the highest screen resolution! If 1920 x 1200 is gone my next laptop won't be a Dell!

just wait for the final product

Also, if all this does happen, we might as well wave goodbye to Dell as it sinks into the depths

I don't want Dell to sink! I still have 2.5 years of a 4 year Complete Care warranty with them!

Major mistake if Dell loses 1920 x 1200 !

Don't worry, you will get a nice replacement Vostro in couple of years.

Oh WXGA isn't that bad by the way. I had WUXGA on my E1705, I would definately pick WXGA over WUXGA for internet browsing, not in games however.

Dell's been lowering the available resolutions for a while now... I have a 1920x1200 sceen on my 15.4 inch I8600. That was the last 15.4 inch inspiron to have that option, IIRC. You can still get the screen on a latitude, but not on the consumer stuff....

WHY Dell? I don't mind paying more for a better screen... why can't I have the option?

Vostro is not an XPS replacement nor is it a high performance line. Vostro is a brand of systems that is replacing Inspiron and Dimension sales in the small business division. Currently the service manuals I have are for two Vostro DESKTOPS. No Laptops yet, however I have the feeling that Vostros will be exactly the same as Inspirons with only their cosmetics changing. Here's how the brands break down.

Home & Home Office:
Inspiron
XPS
Dimension

Small Business:
Vostro
Optiplex
Precision
Latitude
XPS (?)

if the 8700 is an overclocked 8600 i will switch to a 15" and overclock the smaller laptop and play on lower setting on it. i think dell is digging their own grave this year, if i had stock with them these would be the time to sell sell sell! lmao

I really wonder what it is you guys are talking about. First of all, it would be good to remember that the gaming notebook market is tiny, in the grand scheme of things, so what Dell does or does not do in that segment has very little bearing on its fortunes as a company. Second, and more importantly, you do realize that you are talking about a new laptop series, that is not, obviously, meant as a replacement for the XPS series? I am quite confident that Dell will continue its series of ultra-high performance laptops under that moniker. So, again, what are you guys blabbering on about? If you don't like the Vostro, then get an XPS. It's as simple as that.. P.S.: Sorry, Evil, you have said the same thing already. Can't hurt to emphasize that point, though, given that people seem to have problem grasping it...

A company like Dell spends an undescribable sum of money on "branding."

"Inspiron" and "Dimension" are "smart" sounding words. Branders *hate* the letter "V" when they're trying to sell something because the Value connotation comes about.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Vostro line is their "Value" line - but the name is designed to make people not FEEL as if they're buying a "value-line" computer.

i have been looking at some benchmarks now, and a 8600m (gt for other brands and vm for dell) 256mb wont perfom like a 7900gs on inspirons, the only hope is a 8700m, but i see that kinda hard. i will keep looking at benchmarks. If i find a 8600 gt overclocked beyond the speeds of a 8700, performing like an overclcoked 7900gs on games, i will sell my 1705 and buy myself a 15". ( i know its crazy)

Vostro is the value line for Small Business. It says so in the service manual. I'd retreive the quote I posted in another thread, but I'm lazy and tired of repeating myself

Omg calm down...I'm sure there will be a new and better Inspiron probably with 8800M (or 8900M maybe). Dell haven't just published it yet...

The video card on the 1720 is modular so I reckon once there's a GeForce 8800GTS or equivalent part Dell will have something a bit higher end for the Inspiron and something really high end for the XPS. The problem is, nVidia isn't there with the GPU designs yet.

The only reason I always buy Dell Notebook is that it is the only one with 17-inch 1920 x 1200 resolution. This is critical to me.

If they no longer support 1920 x 1200, then BYE-BYE-BYE DELL

WUXGA (1920x1200) will still be available on the Inspirons.

Where in the world did you get that idea?

As I've expressed in other threads. Look at the pics of the new 17" inspirons. There is only one fan. A die shrink (a lot of people suggesting this will happen) will fix a lot of the heat problems but I doubt that it will fix it to the point of not requiring a dedicated GPU fan. I think that ever expecting a card of that power in the new inspirons is foolish based upon cooling solutions being presented to us. If I'm wrong, then I'm wrong, and congrats to all the people that buy new inspirons.
