SONY Vaio VGN-N31M

Hi everyone,

I have a SONY Vaio VGN-N31M which naturally came with VISTA; wanted to revert to XP Pro and got everything going but not the modem.

'Modem device on High Definition Audio Bus' is all I get - there seems to be no way to identify manufacturer?!

Notebook is based on an Intel Chipset (945GM/GU).

Does anybody have a notebook and does know what make the modem is and/or where one can get the driver for XP Pro?

Thanks

Well first off do you need a modem? You'd really only need it in practice if you're planning on using dialup, which I doubt you are if you have a wireless service provider that you're taking. If by chance you are using dialup then yes it would be important, and can hopefully be as easily resolved as going to the laptop manufacturer's website under the support section and looking up the modem driver.

That's how easy it should be in practice, but if you have no luck with that let me know and I'll try and look up some things for you. But I mean if you don't even need it then why bother since everything you need is working fine.

Thanks!
But there is no indication at the manufacturer what modem they've built in.
But I have found out in the meanwhile.

Yeah there should be something listed in the device manager, well at least it is on the laptop I'm typing this on right now. But if there isn't let me know. But if you have found it then hopefully everything else should come up with a quick search on the internet.

Please help me with installation of XP pro on sony vaio... I have a new VGN-FZ11Z laptop, but lots of problems... Cannot install XP pro. Bought external usb floppy drive, transferred the files from C:\\driver\\sata, but usb floppy drive is not recognised when I press "S" to load it... (the system behaves like I didn't have one..) What shall I do? How did you manage this? Thanks a lot, Mihaela

I'm doing a dual boot on a different model a Sony VGN-AR520E that came with Vista. I manage to load xp using intel sata drivers, which i downloaded from intels website. First time I tried it I was unable to load the drivers. I had to go into bios and enable EXTERNAL DEVICE In the bios it says under boot devices under floppy *This device will work when external device is switched on or something similar to that I was using a usb floppy drive. After I enabled it I loaded the Sata drivers pressing S Then choose the mobile sata drivers and was able to load XP Pro. Finding drivers was a task though. I manage to find all the drivers except for the modem just like OP. According to Sony website the modem on my model is conexnant modem. I've tried couple drivers from them but none of them worked.

Thank you very much, CoxJeet

I've made a bootable XP cd with Sata embedded, and installed it.
But the hardest problem that made me buy another computer, was I couldn't find any decent driver for video, sound & USB. And I've tried uptil I had only blue screens, any close-to drivers...

Anyway, I didn't know about enabling external devices at booting.

Thx again,

Miha

By the way, how could you boot on both OP's?
I have kept the XP install on a second partition, but I cannot boot it...

(I don't have a vista CD, only the hidden partition to recover - F10)

Thx a lot,

Miha
