$1000 Budget- What's best laptop for surfing/checking email?

Ive got $1000 to spend on a new laptop. All I do is check email and surf the web. What laptop do you recommend?

well if you aren't specifically looking for a certain company, i would go with the dell e1505. You don't need a graphics card, so you can save a bit of money on that. I think its the best value for a 15 inch.

but i have a dell, so im a little biased against other companies. i would suggest doing some research on specific sub forums.

Yeah I think the E1705 would be overkill for you, I'd just go with the E1505

what about a macbook? 1.83 and they say you can load windows XP on them.

overkill again. Honestly, see if any company is selling out some old stock. Anything with a Pentium 4 2.4ghz (equivilant or above) is fine. I'd also say min. 512mb of RAM. (lower specs will still work, but maybe a little slower than you want) You might want to get one that best suits your internet connection. Like if you use ethernet then just about anything will work. Otherwise check out if you can get a good deal using PCMCIA wireless or gprs cards with an older laptop.

That's my 2cents worth if you're really trying to save a buck.

PS//See which has good battery life.

There's one M90 on Ebay listed at 999 with my specs and only few hours left. I guess you can get it if you are extremely lucky and great with last minute bid skills lol.

I wouldn't go for the Pentium 4 on a laptop. You'll see higher power consumption and heat.

For cheap, go for the Pentium M. It's a great chip and the forerunner to the Core design. Just note that it is several generations out and may not perform well to the latest in gaming (but you didn't need it for that right).
I don't know any companies still selling new ones with this chip, probably the lowest you can get would be the Core Solo variants.

A PIII will be fine for just email & surfing the web. Pick up a good used laptop for 300 bucks on craigslist or ebay.
