Usb devices not recognized/Freeze Windows XP

I've exhausted all things I possibly can with this HP ze2108wm.

I have two USB 2.0 port's, whenever I plug in a USB storage device(thumb drive, usb hdd, ipod) the laptop will freeze. If I plug in a non-storage USB device (gamepad, mouse) Windows will give me 'Unknown Device'.

The odd thing is, if I plug in a usb storage device, Windows freezes, if I unplug the device, plug it back in, and once again remove it, Windows will unfreeze, & any keys I pressed while Windows was frozen, are then activated.

Thus far, I have tryed:

a) safe mode
b) removing ALL USB devices within device mgr in safe mode & rebooting
c) all sorts of plugging, unplugging combinations
d) updating all system drivers
e) re-flashing current system bios & checking to make sure USB is enabled in the bios, to my surprise, the bios makes absolutely not ONE mention about USB.

I'm out of ideas, & I have a hindered laptop with absolutely no USB support, if you have any other ideas, please let me have them, I've ran out of options, Thank you!

I can help you with this. I too had the same problem where my usb devices would not be recognised although my computer didn't freeze. I think the issue has something to do with Service Pack 2. Anyway, do this exactly: 1. Uninstall all usb ports including hubs. 2. Shutdown your computer. 3. Unhook all of your usb devices physically. 4. Unplug your computer from the main power supply. 5. Wait about 30 minutes. 6. Turn on your computer 7. Plug in each device one at a time You should be able to use your storage devices now. It has something to do with a residual amount of power left in the usb ports if you don't unhook the main power supply. I didn't think it would work but I tried this after spending half a day trying everything else and it works for me now. However, mine was not a labtop so I don't know if it will work exactly. You might have to wait until the battery is dead. Good luck!

That did not work, I attempted using a wall outlet powered USB hub, same thing (freezing), so I purchased a PCMIA adapter, which is powered by one of the laptop's USB port's, it work's perfectly, so now I am very confused. Any ideas?

Make sure your laptop has the motherboard chipset drivers installed. Many times the chipset drivers will also install USB filters that are actually very important for the overall function of he the computers USB ports.
