When I try to turn my laptop on screen won't turn on. After a while, dvd drive clicks and it seems to reboot without going to windows. No sound, no nothing... Never had problems with display, but I did with video card -recently I had major artifacts. On the other hand - since I can't access BIOS, maybe it's mobo... Please help me...

Thanks, if it's video card it makes no sense for me to buy a new one as they go for $365-400 on eBay.

If you really need one, I got a 6800U I could sell to you cheap but you'd have to wait a couple weeks...
You may just want to buy a new system if you were waiting for an excuse.

Yeah at this point a new system would be where you should be looking at. Preferably one with a long warranty plan to avoid these kinds of problems in the future.

Yeah, everyone seems to recommend the dell warranty. I've had good experiences with it too, they replaced my *slightly* defective 6800go (criscrossed pattern on screen when launching a game in like 1 in a 100 times) and KB in the last few weeks of my warranty.

Looks like the OP will be up for a new card, which sucks now that they're harder to get. Good luck.

Video Card. I just had the same thing happen to me. If by chance you live in new jersey send me a p.m. I have a spare 6800(non-ultra) i can put in to verify.

I think the video card has the best chances of fixing the problem, but if that's going to cost $400, I would want a new laptop. You could find out which parts still work and sell them to offset the cost a little.

*Update*

Finally I'm able to boot into Windows Safe Mode ( on my external monitor only). I can see vertical and horizontal blue and red lines on my screen, BIOS fonts are messed up.I ran Dell Diagnostics Utility to see what the problem is, and when i tested the video, an error message came up:"error code 5300:0119". So at leat I know video card memory is a problem. I wonder if there's other solution for that than replacing video card?

The videocard doesnt sound salvagable at all imo

Like I said FS forums has 6800U for like $160 or so which isnt such a high amount that buying a new laptop would be a better choice.

OC'd ultra can hang with stock 7800gtx

Just for comparison, highest ultra is like 6800 3d05 and highest gtx is like 8400 3d05 though

Yeah but thats 05. The older cards take a bigger hit in 06 where the benefits of the G70 architecture really come through. Having said that, the 6800's might be a good stopgap until you can get a new machine.

Just bought 6800 Ultra for $145 shipped with 3-month warranty. Can't wait to check it out...

@megaphat
The differential in scores in 3d05 is as high as 1600. I have not seen a differential like that at all in 3d06...

highest I was able to get my Ultra in 06 was 3000 I believe, and I had the core running at 500mhz.

The scores I see in the Orb seem to range around 2700, so the 7800 has about a 1000 pt. differential
