Hey currently I am running my system with an xp/ ubuntu dual boot. To uninstall my ubuntu partition I was told to use the fdisk /mbr command through a windows install disk. Will doing this return my computer to the state where i can use my mediadirect and stuff while keeping my xp partition intact? or do I have to use a specific thing to get a dell mbr

it all depend on how you partition and set up you dual boot XP/ubuntu first time...

So you gave up on ubuntu? Never got the repo's working right for i8k?

Anyway, the fdisk command is gonna let windows rewrite the mbr and if you want to use mediadirect I think you'll have to use the media direct cd with the rmbr command

I'd use the Gparted livecd to delete the partition however.

well I didnt exactly give up on ubuntu.. I really like it but I want to try installing the 32 bit version instead. I think there may be a problem with the app not liking 64bit. It is possible to install the 32bit ubuntu on a 64 bit processor right?

Yep. Although I thought your problem was that your sources.list (repo's) was not correct. I'm not sure if i8k was in the default feisty repo's or not as I always update the list as soon as I format. If you are going to install the 32 bit, why dont you just install it over the ext3 partition you have for 64 bit now?

Or are you gonna take a quick break from Linux?

Well I updated the sources.list with many stuff I found on the ubuntuforums but somehow I just couldnt get the i8k. I didnt realise it was possible to just install it over the partition but i'd still like to try fixing the mbr just for the experience. Whenever I finish downloading the 32 bit version (my internet is extremely slow) i'll let you know how it goes. I'd also like to try installing grub on another partition so that it doesnt overwrite the windows mbr. hmm I was also thinking that since i wouldnt be able to access the media direct partition if its safe to delete it as well. I've also never had to use the dell diagnostics thing, but did installing ubuntu / fixing the mbr prevent me from using it again?(lol I dont even know how to use it anyway)

I've deleted all the extra dell partitions so I really cannot advise you on any of that. Here's a thread regarding it but with no real answer I dont suppose:

I mean I guess if after you fdisk you can use the restore partition, then installing grub on another partition will not affect anything.
