no sound on dell inspirion E1505 laptop

Thread Starter
i have dell inspirion E1505 laptop 6400
running windows xp home

once again i am having problems with my dell laptop

a few days ago my sound quit working. don't know why one night it worked then next day it didnt. no sound at all
tried also reformating no help

i have the sigmetel audio

i have again dwnloaded and installed all drivers for sigmetel on dell site but still no sound

everything looks fine whenever i look in device manager ( no yellow question marks) and even when i open sound properties. it will let me pick the sounds for diffrent things on my computer like always only now i cant hear nothing

now one would think that if my sound card was bad that i couldnt even change anything in sound properties. (greyed out but it's not)

its almost as if everything is set on mute but its not.

i've tried to restore it to a date when i had sound but it didnt work either.
and have tried all other obvious things such as mute not checked. made sure sound was turned on in bios etc....

any ideas?

Try the headphone jack? Do you use the headphone jack frequently? Often this is a symptom of a broken Headphone jack on the motherboard.

yes i do use the headphones quite a bit. how would i gt the jack replaed or could i do it myself?

Dell's official repair for that issue is to replace the motherboard. I don't have a E1505 board handy but if you could get me a hi-res picture of the contacts on the board for the headphone jack I might be able to get you a Digikey part number. If you know how to solder it shouldn't be a huge problem to fix. If you're under warranty, call Dell for repair.

What happens is that those headphone jacks will sometimes break on you and the Laptop thinks that headphones are plugged in, cutting off the speakers. The jack can get broken enough that neither the internal speakers nor headphones will work.

actually what happened was a few months ago my laptop gt really hot and melted the speakers (i'm assuming it melted because i can see where it melted on the front of my laptop)
then the sound went out.
i was able to use the head jack from desktop speakers until it quit working.

couldn't i just buy a soundcard and install that instead of using the onboard one?

Yeah, you could get an expresscard sound card or USB one. It would work fine.

I have a similar problem: my 1505 audio just quit overnight. No volume control icon on the Task Bar and the volume control/mute buttons don't work. Reloaded driver from Dell; no luck. When I use Online Radio Tuner, it works fine - sounds good. I have no idea what to try next.

Any help would be appreciated.

Your problem sounds like software, not hardware.

Any idea where I should look? I'm not an IT expert (far from it), but I'm not afraid to try stuff. By the way, I started to have problems right after I used the FireWire port for the first time to download from a camcorder. Any connection?

Thanks for any help.

Unfortunately, I have no experience with firewire. If I were you, I would try to disable firewire and reinstall the audio driver. Of course this isn't a desired solution but it may work.
