Antivirus necessary?

I'm just wondering how many of you mac users out there use antivirus or feel that it's necessary? If I was running xp on my mac would it be necssary then? I'm not sure if it's possible for viruses to cross over from the xp to mac os. It is on the same machine... not quite sure how that works... Is running xp a liability?
I'm just trying to find out as much as I can so I don't screw it up because I'm expecting my first macbook in three days.

Thanks,
Joe

It is not a liability for you to run XP on the Mac. Since Windows Viruses are designed to be executed on windows, they are incompatible with OS X's execution scheme.

You will need antivirus on Windows just because that is the name of the game. It won't harm OS X should one get through, but it will hurt Windows.

There are antivirus apps available for OS X, but most people I know do not bother with them.
