barebone system.... so where?

Thread Starter
Am I the only one here who cant seem to find any reputable place to find a high end new barebone? Preferably from Asus.

I am pretty new to the laptop building world, but I make a living building desktop customs so I dont think I'll have much trouble getting comfortable here with a little help from you guys.

Just curious, why would you prefer a barebone? Those are usually bigger, heavier and less battery life.

From your post I believe that you are looking to building a laptop by yourself. When it comes to bare bone kits you will only find a pretty much preassembled kit with screen, mobo, chassis, optical drives and in many cases the video card depending on the type of mobile system you are looking at.

Pretty much what you can "customize" on a mobile system to install yourself is the CPU, hard drives and RAM.

There's a tutorial here on pretty much what to do with a DYI mobile system once you get it.

Different users have different needs. To some, just a 12"-14" mobile system with integrated video will do more than fine for them as they will only be running basic applications like office, internet browsing and e-mail. Since these systems do not need to have very powerful components the components inside generate less heat and consume less power so they provide larger battery life. To some a system with the same capabilities but with a 17" monitor is important because they simply need the bigger screen (to read better) or to have more screen space. Gaming or workstation mobile systems on the other hand need to handle anything you throw at it and need the more powerful components like dedicated video card, the processor needs to run at full throttle (consuming more battery) and in some cases they have dual hard drives and optical drives which demand way more power from a battery than a normal office system, thus the reduced battery life and higher heat output. Quick example: gas consumption between a Yugo and a Hummer, both take you places but their overall power is different.

What's the deal with barebones laptops? I see them on ebay all the time. Where the hell are you going to find an optical drive that fits that specific chassis? And the mobile nvidia board, good luck finding one of those too. I thought about doing this but gave up since no one sells the parts (other than cpu, hdd, and ram).

rjtech and the company that makes the barebone.

Keep in mind that when a new video card comes out they are usually sold only to customers who order a new complete computer system.

Unlike their desktop counterparts, mobile video cards take some more time to appear for separate purchase.

The only people I've seen who carry video cards separately are RJtech and mxmupgrade but still they take some time to receive new video cards as companies that manufacture mobile systems give priority to users ordering new complete systems.
