***OFFICIAL XPS M1330 Anticipation thread!***

I figured it's about time we had a dedicated thread for the M1330. I can't stop dribbling over the thing, despite my concerns about its price and Dell's terrible website errors.

So please post all comments on the M1330 here!

Concerns thus far:

1.) The Santa Rosa chipset is supposed to be good for 800mhz FSB, correct? So how come the RAM options are for 667mhz ONLY?

2.) The battery options list a 6 cell, a 9 cell, and a "4" cell? Is the 4 cell a typo?

3.) Just how fast is that 8400GS?

I want one.
Yeah those are pretty much the same questions i had... i also thought the santa rosas were quad cores? i didnt see that mentioned anywhere..
oh yeah i had also wondered if the 9 cell will stick out horribly.. because the battery is not centered on the back of the laptop so it would look pretty stupid I'd think...

I'm talking on Dell Chat, and that 4 cell is supposedly a 37Whr battery, but I'm still skeptical of 3 battery types...

I am considering getting one as well. I was hoping it would support DELL's D/Dock but I am guessing it does not (since the D/Dock does not come up as an option). Does anyone know what the deal is with the two different screens available? I see one is "LED based" but I am not familiar with such technology. It sounds like it makes the screen slimmer and perhaps use less power???

There are two different types of LCDs available: CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Light) or LED (Light Emitting Diode). The LED display are new and are supposedly better when outside, more uniformly lit (not like dual or single lamp systems in CCFL display), use "considerably" less power, and are indeed thinner. I'd have to see one in action, though. Supposedly CCFLs are still brighter, but again, this may be display dependent.

Dell really need a manpower overhaul. Check out my little conversation. I removed his name to protect his...err...personality:

1:57:41 PM SystemSystemInitial Question/Comment: I'd like to order a few laptops. Was wondering if a bundle discount was available.

1:59:56 PM AgentWelcome to Dell Sales Chat. My name is *****. I'll be your personal sales agent today. Give me a moment to review your concern, please don't go away.
2:00:01 PM AgentHello William.
2:00:23 PM CustomerWilliamGHi there.
2:00:32 PM AgentHi.
2:01:31 PM Agentwe already have instant discounts applied with our laptop, it would have the same price if you get for bundle.
2:01:46 PM CustomerWilliamGI see
2:01:48 PM CustomerWilliamGOK
2:01:56 PM CustomerWilliamGCan you explain two things for me?
2:02:03 PM CustomerWilliamGI was configuring the XPS M1330 on Dell Home
2:02:09 PM CustomerWilliamGAnd the battery options are confusing
2:02:20 PM CustomerWilliamGI see three different battery types: 4 cell, 6 cell, and 9 cell
2:02:37 PM CustomerWilliamGIs that a mistake on Dell's site, or are there really 3 battery types?
2:04:27 PM Agentit has different battery life, for example the 9 cell can last about 3-5 hours while 6 cell 1.5- 3 hours.
2:05:04 PM CustomerWilliamGOK, but that doesn't answer my question
2:05:10 PM CustomerWilliamGI see a 4 cell
2:05:12 PM CustomerWilliamGAs an option
2:05:37 PM Agent4 cell can last for 1.2 hours.
2:05:59 PM Agent*1-2 hours
2:05:59 PM CustomerWilliamGSo are you saying there IS a 4 cell, or are you guessing the amount of time it will last?
2:07:00 PM Agentthere are 5 types of battery we offer, how ever it is not offered all on all laptop.
2:08:03 PM CustomerWilliamGRight, but I'm only interested in the batteries available for the XPS M1330
2:08:09 PM CustomerWilliamGCan you give me the specifications of the 4 cell battery?
2:08:14 PM CustomerWilliamGHow many Whr?
2:09:00 PM Agentthe 4 cell battery can last about 1-2 hours, it has 37Whr.
2:09:34 PM AgentAre you planning to purchase a system online today?
2:09:38 PM CustomerWilliamGPossibly.
2:09:52 PM AgentWould you like me to help you configure the system?
2:09:58 PM CustomerWilliamGMy other question was why the processor is 800mhz FSB, and the RAM is only 667mhz FSB
2:10:24 PM AgentOk.
2:11:34 PM Agentthe processor and RAM has different speed this does not affect the performance, they don't really have same speed to function properly.
2:11:51 PM CustomerWilliamGOK....
2:12:14 PM Agentdo you already have the configuration for the laptop?
2:12:19 PM CustomerWilliamGI do, yes.
2:13:09 PM Agentis it ok, to see your configuration to see if you have everything you need for the system?
2:14:48 PM CustomerWilliamGI'm sure I configured it just fine, but thanks for asking.
2:14:55 PM CustomerWilliamGAnd thank you for your time.
2:14:58 PM SystemSystemThe session has ended!

Nice little review here:

http://www.notebookreview.com/defaul...view=XPS+M1330

Slightly confusing review since it makes no mention of the WHITE color (says there's only 2 colors in the review), and they mention a Blu-ray drive, and only the TWO battery types, leading me to believe that 4-cell doesn't exist, perhaps?
wow very nice review there... i hate the way the 9 cell looks on that machine tho... hopefully the 6 cell isnt quite as odd looking... I'd like to see some comparision pics of the LED backlit versus the regular backlit as well... and does anyone know if its an LG webcam or if dell decided to go another route?

Also confused about this part:

"In addition, the M1330 comes with a two-megapixel web camera built in directly above the LCD. Unlike almost every notebook webcam currently on the market, the webcam built into the M1330 is a remarkable performer. Brightness, color and contrast are all near perfect, and the face tracking feature lets you keep your face front and center during video conferences."

If they received the LED display, they wouldn't have the two-megapixel camera. AHHH the confusion!

Not confusing at all. Let me break it down for you.. The display is STILL an LCD (Liquid Crystal Display). The only thing that has change on the display, is the mechanism used to light it from the back. All LCD's are lit from behind. What they changed is, the light. Instead of Cold Cathode lights (think a flourescent light at your office in the ceiling but tons smaller - http://computer.howstuffworks.com/question580.htm), they now use LED lights. They use less power and are even smaller than than you can imagine. Thats the only difference
post #12 of 119
So the one they are reviewing there has the non LED backlit display and the better webcam?
the whole thing with the FSB vs the memory speed is not like it used to be.

back in the day with ddr3200, you wanted 200mhz ram or higher for an 800 fsb.

things are changing now but... even 667 in dual channel supposedly cannot fully saturate the 800mhz fsb

Nope. Even in the video - they tell you it comes with a LED LCD. Then he goes and bends it to show the flex. It is the LED LCD with WEBCAM. Webcam is available on it period.

No, there's still confusion. The M1330 is available with the LED + 0.3MP camera, or the CCFL + 2MP camera. Clearly Notebookreview received the LED display, therefore they received the 0.3MP camera. What is confusing is that they say the 2MP camera is great, which they wouldn't have if they have the LED display.
.3megapixel with he led backlight

if you want the 2megapixel cam you have to stick with the cathode back lighting

im guessing the offer the 4cell to keep the weight under 4lbs so it can be considered a ultra light, the the 6 and 9cell up the weight, i believe the 9 cell jumps up to 4.7lbs

also a review on pcmag

i dont know much about draft N, but if i have the N card in the laptop, is it backward compatible say if i go to a hotspot that uses B or G?

Still more confusion It would be a 3.0 mega pixel or 2.0 megapixel - a 0.3 would be like sub mega pixel. it would be 1/3 of a pixel. Wouldn't even see it! Either way - lots of misinformation out there.

I am actually more concearned with the no Blu-Ray option.

No, you're wrong there. 0.3MP is not the same as 1/3 of a pixel! 0.3MP is VGA resolution, i.e. 640x480.

Here's a 0.3MP camera: http://www.amazon.com/Kodak-200-0-3M.../dp/B00004ZCNE

So that review is either mis-stating something, or they're flat out wrong.
