Thanks in advance for any help.
I just recently acquired an IBM Thinkpad T23 from a friend. She said I could keep it if I could fix it. So I looked for a problem. These are the specs I managed to locate:
Pentium III-M 1.13 GHz, 512 MB of ram... and that's it. I'm excluding the accessories since they are not part of the problem. The motherboard has a Super Savage chip in it for graphics and some Intel chips as well... But those are not the problem.
The problem it had was that when it turned on, only one of the backlights would turn on and the fan would start going fast and then slow. It is all it would do. I researched and found that the problem was with a loose power inductor. After soldering it back on the motherboard, the notebook booted fine. I thought that all was fine...
Three hours later the computer froze. I shut it off and restarted it, getting nothing. All I got were four beeps about one second long each and not screen (it stayed off). I shut it down again and turned back on. Same problem. I ripped it apart and put it back together. Same deal. I became frustrated and left it alone.
Yesterday I took it out and turned it on. It booted again. Again, 4 hours later after I re-formated the hard drive it crashed. I shut it down and turned it on again. This time I heard the entire system boot up normally, but the screen remained off. I shut it off again and turned it on. The four beeps and nothing again. The Lenovo/ IBM support site had nothing of help regarding these symptoms. I also took the monitor apart and nothing seemed to be lose. Currently I am re-assembling the notebook toguether to try it after having checked all serviceable components. Is there anyone that could make sense of the four beeps? I'll experiment on the T23 to find all possible problems.
Again, thanks for any help.

Update:
I re-assembled the t23 and I observed that the motherboards can tell if it has DIMM or if I took them out. If the DIMM are out, the motherboard beeps the one- three- three- one beep code signifying DIMM. This is constant. After inserting one DIMM I get the four beeps. I switch them, still. I put them in all possible combinations, same deal, 4 beeps at almost one second intervals. I guess that the problem lies with the DIMM (although it is strange that BOTH cards are damaged) or with whatever next piece of hardware BIOS checks. Thanks for any help on the subject.
