how does CC work if a laptop needs to be exchanged?

Thread Starter
I have a 9100 from 2004 and I'm curious about what to expect when I call Dell about it. I stopped using it and let me kids play with it, and well, they killed it. I have 40 days left on my 3yr warranty with CC, and since I don't use it myself, I'm not in a hurry, so I figured I'd ask for some input here first

What should I expect to get in the way of a response from Dell? I suspect the mobo is toast, and being as old as it is, I wonder if they even will both with trying to replace it?

If they decide to let me replace it, what should I expect? Do I get offered what is closest to the parts I have? meaning 15.4" screen, closest cpu to a p4 3.2, graphics closest to a mr9800, etc.? Or is it based on the $2500 I spent in 2004? When I looked on Dell's site for new laptops, it seemed like I could build something like mine out of the 1501 line for under $1500, and I'd feel a little ripped off if that were the case. So before I go into any such discussions, I was hoping some of you that have dealt with Dell previously could give me some pointers.

I wonder things like, do they force an older model like a 9200 on me, or the aforementioned 1501, or is it based on what was paid, do they allow credit based on the original price and allow you/me to 'upgrade' and pay the difference for something new (like a M1710 or M2010)? I would like to have some idea of how to deal with Dell first, so I don't agree to something I should have rejected, and pushed for something better. (i sort of got myself wishing for that last option, and considering how wild it would be to pay a little extra and get a M2010. that is such a sweet machine. but I'm suspecting I'm smoking weed on that one, but figured it was better to ask here first) haha

Thanks in advance for your comments. This site has always been such a wonderful help over the years.

They'll most likely replace the system altogether with today's specs matching your system. Just this winter I had my 9200 replaced and received a 9400 with core2duo chipset. So all in all, hurry up and contact them and get an exchange asap!

That's assuming the system can't be fixed. Dell will try to fix the system before getting you a replacement. If your kids just didn't royally thrash it I doubt you're going to get a replacement system on the first call (though stranger things have happened).

Expect the system to at least have some parts replaced and if it still doesn't get fixed then you'll get a replacement system.

or you might just get lucky and get a 1520/1521 or 1720/1721

Here's how it works,
You call in and let them know that its physically damaged. Tell em your kids stepped on it and it doesn't turn on.

They'll replace it with a refurbished unit of equal or greater value.

If they do not have any refurbished units currently, they will send you the newest model. Most likely not refurbished.

Enjoy

cpuguy: You are wrong, Complete Care does not mean Automatic replacement. I work on Complete care claims all the time and I REPAIR the systems. Unless the laptop's been accidentally left on the roof of a car and run over it's not going to get replaced without some form of repair. Especially if the Laptop's still in one piece and the LCD isn't smashed.

However, the Op might get lucky and the phone tech he gets might replace it for him. That has happened before but it's by no means a guarantee.
