I've owned 3 HP/COMPAQ laptops, yes 3 laptops and one was the ZD7000. It is a very sturdy and great looking laptop. Many of the problems that plague the sager are present on the ZD (heat, bad battery life, fans are a tad noiser then most) but these are DESKTOP replacements.

I can honestly say given the 4 laptops I've owned the 8790 is much, much nicer in terms of build quality and overall looks. The features are amazing on the 8790, but I am looking forward to the new higher res LCD's. I agree with Adam that the res of the 8790's now is pretty nice for daily use, but for me the higher res will be better because I run a high res on my desktop at home. The res on the 8790 IS NOT BAD though and is very comfortable to use for hours on end. My old HP with the higher res gave me bad headaches after prolonged use.

I have a feeling within a month or two the 8790 will have the higher LCD as an option, esp if HP is now shipping the ZD with them.

I will take some pics of the ZD higher res against my sager for those that want to see the differnece (Flashram is my bro)

Yes please Sager, upgrade the 8790 to 1680x1050 soon and I will definitely consider ordering an 8790, although I would prefer 1920x1200.

My current laptop is an IBM that I bought over two years ago has a wonderful wide angle, bright 15" 1600x1200, and I could consider downgrading to 1680x1050, but certainly not to 1440x900. Think about it: Dell has been shipping 15" 1920x1200 for a while now!

Thanks Flashram for those screens specs...noticed the contrast ratio is still 300:1, which I believe is equal to that of the 8790 (adam@PCTorque, is that correct?).

The highest I've been able to find so far is on the Fujitsu N5010 Crystal View...from their brochure:

>>
Innovative Crystal View Screen Technology
Exceptional image quality with a large glossy Crystal View display that is 40% brighter than the standard TFT screen. This display’s super dark background, tripling the standard contrast ratio up to 600:1, provides crisp, vibrant colors for the ultimate computer viewing experience.
<<

If there's any laptop with a better contrast ratio, I'd love to know...I'm fixated on the best screen since I do a lot of reading/writing on the puter, and these eyes are getting any younger.

Aussie, how does current 8890 screen compare in the numbers to the newer Fujitsu N5010 in your view? Assuming if the older was great, the current one should be even better...will check the specs out myself as well... thanks.

It is a pity that it is only 6 bit colour. I suspect the same thing happened with some of the SXGA screens in the 8890's. I was so disappointed when they stopped shipping the top end SXGA screens. So many people missed out on what I regard as *the* best screen I have ever seen in a laptop (with the exception now of the newer Fujitsu N5010).

If you go to 8 bit colour depth you get 16.7M colours. I posted an analysis of how Windows maps colours into the colour space of an LCD. You have to remember that Windows uses either 16 bit colour (5:6:5 RGB) or 32 bit colour (8:8:8:8 RGB + Alpha (transparency)). If you have a 6 bit (or 18bit depending upon your definition) LCD then Windows has to interpolate the colours is has into the colour space of the LCD. This is where banding can show up quite badly.

All this is futher compounded by the fact that the Bliss wallpaper is a very poorly compressed JPEG with huge artifacts in it, which makes people with super high spec LCD's that there is something wrong with their LCD.

I would be interested to see the new WSXGA+/-/#/? specs because it gives you more vertical pixels.

Thanks for the clarification on the 6bit vs 18bit information. I'm still accustomed to 18bit being the norm for describing LCD's

Now, if only Sager would use the Harmon Kardon speakers just like Toshiba, but I guess it is a wishful thinking just like 64bit AMD in Sager 8790.

BTW, I like the WXGA (1400x900). I am wary of WSXGA: everything would be so small, I would need magnifiying glass. I know for the fact that when UXGA came out with with 1600 X 1400 res, everything was so tiny. Browsing websites was nothing but pain in the

Its acually not that bad unless you do wear glasses or have bad eyes. The resolution on my WUXGA was 1920 x 1200 and I LOVED it. The screen was even smaller than 17". I would love to see a higher resolution in the 17" screen, thats what I am waiting for...

I just checked the ZD7000 forums, and then spoke to an HP sales geek. According to both, the new WSXGA+ screen is made by Hitachi. That definitely dampens my initial enthusiasm. Hitachi screens are not as good as Samsung, Sharp or LG/Philips, so I'm just gonna hold off and see if these other companies get in on the 17" market.

Just got the shipping notice on my zd7000 with the wsxga+ screen and Go5700, almost a week early. So the screens are definitely shipping for those with doubts.

Great to hear there's an option now verified. Looks like Sager dropped the ball with this release option =(.

Let's see a review!

I hope you don't mean that they won't propose this option at some point!

For those that care, my 17" wsxga+ just got here.

Quick picture before I wipe it clean and reinstall. I'll post more later.

Hey, Flash -- don't forget a review!

And whenever you get the chance, some 3dmark scores for that 5700go would be fantabulous.
