Looks nice, Flash. Can't wait to see how that 5700 handles games & graphics.

Oh.....my....God. Is that a glossy screen surface I see before me? Please tell me its a glossy screen surface on that new 17" WSXGA+ screen......

Umm, the specs dont look that great. Brightness is the same as the old 17-inch, which is that panel's main weakness.

That looks better than 1440x900 but I still want the 1920x1200 WUXGA! hopefully it will be SOON!

It is a pity that it is only 6 bit colour. I suspect the same thing happened with some of the SXGA screens in the 8890's. I was so disappointed when they stopped shipping the top end SXGA screens. So many people missed out on what I regard as *the* best screen I have ever seen in a laptop (with the exception now of the newer Fujitsu N5010).

If you go to 8 bit colour depth you get 16.7M colours. I posted an analysis of how Windows maps colours into the colour space of an LCD. You have to remember that Windows uses either 16 bit colour (5:6:5 RGB) or 32 bit colour (8:8:8:8 RGB + Alpha (transparency)). If you have a 6 bit (or 18bit depending upon your definition) LCD then Windows has to interpolate the colours is has into the colour space of the LCD. This is where banding can show up quite badly.

All this is futher compounded by the fact that the Bliss wallpaper is a very poorly compressed JPEG with huge artifacts in it, which makes people with super high spec LCD's that there is something wrong with their LCD.

I would be interested to see the new WSXGA+/-/#/? specs because it gives you more vertical pixels.
With current LCDs the situation is better. I think there is a chip built into most modern LCDs that takes the 24bits RGB information (disregarding the alpha channel) of Windows, and transforms that information into 18bits while only sacrificing 0.5 million colors (16.2m vs. 16.7m) by using either Frame-Rate Control or Dithering. Although both have their disadvangtages (FRC loses response time and dithering loses sharpness), at least we have way more colors than 262K when it comes to LCDs.

The panel is very, very bright. I don't think the specs I linked to earlier are correct. I will boot Knoppix later and see if I can figure out what panel this is. And yes it's the glossy reflective surface. It looks like the new Sony xbrite IMO.

Sounds very, very cool. I've been praying that the glossy treatment would make it onto a 17-inch panel. The glossy screens often get poor reviews from know-nothing IT journalists, but the fact is, they absolutely kick ass IMHO.

I guess the quality of these screens vary according to the AR coating they have.

i'm very curious to see a shot of that screen from the side...to get a feel on what kind of an angle you get....
does look pretty though, and i love all that real estate....

on the other hand...my eyes are terrible, and i wear glasses/contacts....and hell..even with my glasses, i still cant sit too far away and expect to read text!

hmmm..speaking from a strictly gaming standpoint....which is better? the current 8790 screen, or this new one?

hmmm...let's assume i'm not going to run my games at 16xx by 10xx either....
i have a 5660 with 1600x1200 now, and i usually dont run my games higher than 1280x1024 anyways....

Whoa, thats a cool winXP setup, where did you get that?
OK, so we're talking very, very nice panel. Now all we need is an 8-pipe mobile GPU and my dream notebook will exist.

now that is VERY VERY pretty
good luck and congrats!

I wonder how this compares to the Sony XBrite and Fujitsu Crystal View. Guess I'm gonna make another trip to J&R this weekend.

Darn...the two shops I always want to visit, J&R and B&H, are never open on the same day!

Hey Flash! How's your ZD7000 treating you? I'm guessing that you've been having too much fun with it to post more comments about it.

Loving it. I've been trying to tweak drivers, etc. I am clocked at 350/650 right now and everything is stable. 3dmark01 is 12294 (3.06ghz cpu 533 FSB). Played Far Cry, UT2004, and Planetside last night for several hours. 2x AA + this screen = drool. I haven't turned my desktop on in 2 days. I am going to go pick up another 512 DIMM today so I can run in dual channel mode (update: just got it. Impressive Sandra numbers).

The only other interesting thing I can add is that I get 2 hrs 20 minutes battery life out of this monster. That is with wifi on and surfing the web and using apps. The Nvidia PowerMizer of the Go5700 works great for conserving battery life. This is definitely a keeper.

Sounds terrific! It even out-benched the 8790, huh? You just made my decision much more interesting. Enjoy your baby!!!

Nice, Seems like you have a pretty solid machine there, Ive never liked HP's but maybe they have gotten better since I have used them. The 2 hour 20 min battery is nice too, maybe Ill go check one out this weekend.

I called a local BB to see if they had the ZD7000 with its new LCD. They only have a demo, so I took a quick run over to see it. That screen IS quite purty. BB didn't have any in-stock and could only take pre-orders. Howevuhh, I've got an HP Shopping card with zero balance...or it HAD a zero balance until I just placed an order.

Here's the configuration...

CTO Pavilion zd7000 series notebook
- Intel Pentium 4 3.20 GHz w/HT
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional
- 512MB DDR SDRAM (I'll upgrade to 1 GB DDR 400 PC3200)
- 80 GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive
- 4X DVD+RW/R & CD-RW Combo Drive
- 54g Integrated Broadcom 802.11b/g Wireless LAN
- 17.0" WVA WSXGA+ BrightView (1680x1050)
- 128MB NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5700
- 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

It'll ship in about a week. I'll give it a workout to see if it's a keeper. I'll post a review here, as well. It'll be a fun way to pass the time while I await the release of Hypersonic's AX7 and the WUXGA screen for the 8790. Who knows, maybe the ZD will win me over and my long search will finally be at an end?? Anyone really believe that, given my proclivity for trying/returning notebook after notebook?

There's a first time for everything!

Well, I just got a call from HP saying the LCD is backordered. So I cancelled the order thus ending my brief flirtation with HP.
