No DVI-out on New Inspirons?

Thread Starter
I have a 9300 and even my machine has DVI-out. How can the new Inspirons only support VGA-out?

yup, it was dell's choice to have a $600 blu-ray option but not include dvi or hdmi

Because 95% of Dell's customers don't know what DVI is. Seriously, I've gone to so many customer's homes and what do I find? An Ultrasharp monitor with both the DVI and VGA plugged in with input on the monitor set to VGA (I tell them they don't need both connected and I leave DVI plugged in, next time I come for another repair BOTH are plugged back in). 95% of the customers don't know what DVI is and don't care. They're used to the old VGA port and if you don't include it they'll throw a fit.

What they could have done is just put a DVI-I port on it and included a DVI-VGA adapter.

95% don't use dvi so it's okay for dell to get rid of it?

96% don't know or care about firewire so toss that out
97% don't know or care about dial up so toss that out
98% don't know or care about expresscard so toss that out

there's a lot of keys on the keyboard that never get used by 95% of people so we could toss a few of those out too

yay for dell to offer $600 blu ray option but not have dvi or hdmi

whoa - no Expresscard anymore?

So what is replacing it?

It probably costs them $5/unit to add a DVI or HDMI port and still have the legacy VGA port available. Same reason cars don't have drain plugs on their automatic transmissions or even dipsticks to check the oil level in the automatic transmission. It saves the manufacturer a few pennies /unit which adds up in the long run. Dell like any big corporation has alot of beancounters working for them.

I thought that sort of thing was dictated by the video card manufacturer.

Here is a option if you need or want DVI out..................I don't know how good it works.

Nice...only tacks on $160 to the price.

That Targus dock also won't use your system's internal GPU to display on the external monitor....It has it's own GPU onboard.

Repeat after me:

Laptops are not desktops
Laptops are NOT desktops
Laptops are NOT desktops

Desktop card makers do dictate what ports are present on cards, however, in the Laptop realm it is Dell who specifies what ports are or are not included on their Laptops.

This might also work for you.................DVI...........http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/gx...gital/home.php

And Yes I know Laptops are not Desktops

That seemed a bit hostile there.....

Wasn't meant to be, but then again I am evil after all. It just gets bothersome when people think that the same rules apply to desktops that apply to Laptops. PK has been around here long enough he of all members should know that.

Well, I won't be buying the new generation of Inspirons then, even with better videocards. I need DVI because I use a DVI->HDMI cable to hook my laptop up to my HDTV.
most ppl don't use DVI or need it for that matter. with the correct settings on your laptop you are not going to notice a difference between the DVI & D-sub connection.

Dell is just saving a few $$ x thousands of units based on research that asserts ppl just don't use it.

As others have stated most ppl don't know what DVI is. Now when the high end XPS series comes out expect it to have HDMI output (like the 1300 series) , why? Because they want to ensure that 5% is happy.

Because that 5% is who they sell to
