My Microwave Keeps Knocking Out My WLAN!

I have a 2.4 Ghz wireless router and I read that microwaves operate on that frequency. My router is in the basement and the microwave is in the kitchen. I am on the top floor directly above the microwave and the router is pretty much directly below the microwave. Every time the microwave is used, my wireless stops working. Is there anything I can do, without having to move stuff to fix this?

move the router as far away as possible from the microwave.

you cant do much with current tech. throw the MW out?

Try a different channel on the wireless.

actually, might want to replace the microwave as it's leaking.. it shouldn't leak that much to interfere with your signal. does it also interfere with a 2.4 GHz cordless phone? (if you have any)
The phone can interfere with the wireless signal as they both actually transmit. The microwave transmits RF into the oven, but it should remain in there..

I don't think it is leaking. It is a pretty new microwave and is built into an oven. I have a 2.4 Ghz phone upstairs, but I really don't think that is causing problems.

Very similar to this:

And I'll try changing the channel, right now it is on 6.

Change channels as olyteddy has suggested, and keep the following in mind:
distance, distance, distance. Move the WiFi router away from the microwave--10 feet away is probably the minimum, I'd guess.

trying to think of a reason to have a wireless router in the kitchen..

but seriously, a microwave shouldn't leak and it could be a defective brand new one. No company is perfect in their production. also might want to that brand and wireless interference and maybe that will offer an explanation.

Newer microwaves don't seem to have didly for shielding anymore. My 25 year old Microwave (still kicking) has NEVER caused interference with my Wi-Fi.

I don't know.. my microwave has a manufacture date of April 2007 on the sticker (I just got it last week) and it doesn't radiate at all and doesn't cause any interference.
I guess the OP should move the router and/or computer somewhere else.
that or break out the aluminum foil and start wrapping the microwave

Tried that once--didn't work for me. Had a dish network displayer receiver that would go badly pixellated when the microwave was used.

you seriously tried it? I don't think aluminum foil would actually be the best choice. Lead would definitely work though..
and I still say a microwave that interferes (leaks) like this is defective..

Nah, not foil (the real explanation would take too long). I went to the hardware store and got some the metal screen--you know, metal screen-door-fencing stuff. @2.4 GHz, the wavelength of the microwave radiation would be about 80 mm, so the fence would be opaque with holes smaller than this 80 mm. I think my problem was that the leak wasn't on the door (of the microwave) proper, but somewhere near it. And I didn't screen anything but the door.
