what are ieee ports for?
IEEE1394 connections are used for high speed data transfers such as transferring digital video from a camcorder to a computer, transferring songs between an iPod and a computer, etc.

Correctly they are IEEE1394 ports, also known as Firewire (Apple) and i-Link (Sony).
When USB was version1.1 and rated at 12mbps it was too slow for connecting to hard drives or video cameras. IEEE1394 is rated at 400mbps. Most common use is to connect miniDV camcorders directly to your computer for video editing.
Check out the trade association for further details

USB2 rated at 480mbps is now the more common method of connecting to external hard drives

and nowadays FW800 (is it ieee1394b? ) is the fastest thing, with it´s 800mbps speed.
but i think only apple are using it right now.

edit: a downside of fw400 is that it does not really support cables longer than 150 cm....

There are 4 pin and 6 pin firewire. Most devices use 6 pin, most laptops have 4 pin. You can can a 4 to 6 pin cable or 6 to 6 pin. Here is a picture of what you would need (4 to 6).

mbps is mega BITS per second, 8 Bits to the Byte
400m-bits-ps is approximately 50m-bytes-ps
The 6pin connector can provide power for example to a hard drive, the 4pin is data only. This is fine for connecting to a camcorder which has its own batteries but does mean that external hard drives need their own power supply.

IEEE defines several port specifications. The most common ones are IEEE1284, IEEE1394, IEEE802.11b, IEEE802.11g, and IEEE802.11a.
