Anyone Using Vista 64 Bit

Just wondering how you find it overall ?

I ran it for a while until I hit the wall with finding 64bit drivers. 80% of my hardware I could not find 64bit drivers for so I went back to 32bit and working great again.

I didn't notice a huge performance leap from 32bit in the apps that I was using although I have heard that some apps run significantly faster in Vista 64.

Maybe by the time SP3 comes out, or the next Windows, all hardware manufacturers would have caught up.

I tried it up until the point where my main game Company Of Heros didn't know what to make of it anymore and just crahsed to blue screen once a day. Now I'm back on XP . True Gamers use Xp I suppose.

It's real sad if Vista 64 bit has poor support and is unpopular when all the new processors are 64 bit.

32 bit programs work under WOW64.

I couldn't find many drivers from Dell for my E1705, and for the Angel USB TV either.

I agree with the other posters until recently. Drivers support has gotten much better. I have a M1710 that I am running Vista X64 with no issues games apps etc. I would give it a shot and see how you like it. I find it much quicker than the 32 bit version.

Its a little frustrating to run into problems where things don't work but so far I've managed to find alternatives to anything that couldn't work so I'm not too upset. I like it though

I made the jump to 64-bit Vista about a month ago. So far, it's been rock stable. I've managed to find signed drivers for all of my hardware, including my bluetooth dongle (ponied up the money for the Bluesoleil suite - works great with my HS850 headset and Skype).

As others have notices, performance is better under 64-bits. Multitasking is smoother, which is a big deal to a developer who runs 2-3 concurrent virtual machines + Visual Studio 2005, SQL Server 2005 and IIS. Also, the kernel is more robust with base address randomization and other goodies that keep the spyware nice and confused.

My only gripe is the chipset memory limitation w/XPS M1710. I've got 4GB installed but only 3.25 avaialble. Oh well...

Yeah I picked up 4 gigs of Patriot Memory for my XPS M1710 this week and got it today dropped her in with the latest bios and still only showing 3.25 - 3.4 gigs available. I guess it has to do with the mobos chipset. Kind of bummed about it but the ram was only 250 from Newegg so a lot cheaper than from dell. Just wish i could drop in that other 2 gigs i have lying around now. I'm also running 64 bit vista ultimate. So far I haven't had any issues. The minor things like running some installs under xp mode and I gave my account the full admin rights and got rid of all the annoying are you sure you want to run or do this pop ups. I'm running BF2, Photoshop CS2, Zbrush 2,3, Mudbox, Painter, 3DS Max version 8, version 9 64 bit, Maya 8, Unreal 4 editor (UE3 based games), and all of my development tools with no issues. I did notice a pretty good size boost in Max 9 64 bit and even more today with the added memory. I haven't had any issues finding drivers yet. Maybe the video card drivers are a bit dated but I'm sure more will come out. Vista isn't even a year old yet so I'm not worried.

good to hear. I think I might just give it a try...

Had it on my 1710 for 24hrs, no problems with any thing, games, cad etc all are working just fine and as more drivers become availiable it will get even better.

Since the latest microsoft update all components are finally working well. I use the 64 bit ie browser (supposed to be more secure), and since adobe dosen't support 64 bit flash, I don't have to see any of the annoying bliknking flash advertisements. If I need to view a video that uses flash, I'll just run the 32 bit browser. Itunes officially doesn't support 64 bit vista, but since the last microsoft update I can finally watch itunes video without stuttering problems.

MathCad 13 still will not work eventhough it did with vista beta. I'm thinking of going back to MatLab or Mathmatica, since MathCad support and versions has not been very good tha past couple of years.

I ran 64 bit Vista for about 3 months. All in all I really did like Vista, the UI is pleasant to use, responds quickly and has a lot of interesting features. But stepping past the "wow shiny!" portion, I eventually became disillusioned and switched back to XP. USB devices seemed to be a nightmare in Vista for one. Every time I plugged a new device into the machine I would get a series of install menus that would all fail to find the drivers (even though the correct ones had been installed as per the manufacturers instructions). After failing to find all these drivers, the device would mysteriously pop up as installed about 10 minutes later. The last straw for me was my sound card. I have a Xi-Fi from Creative that works flawlessly in XP. I also have the front drive/bay add-on for the sound card. The add-on WOULD NOT function in Vista. Initially there were beta drivers on the Creative website to get the 64 bit going, but when I last checked back they seem to have removed those. I've done quite a bit of reading on the audio portion of Vista and it all seems to tip back and forth between shoddy programming on Microsoft's part or all of the DRM that is supposedly packed into Vista. All I know is that I could not get the hardware I had legally bought to play my music I had legally bought because of driver issues and/or DRM holding back that driver development. Oh, and according to the Creative website, Vista changed how sound is moved through your computer, basically rendering a sound card worthless as it does not allow many forms of hardware processing to prevent piracy. The last batch of drivers I was able to find included an open source program that would take sound info from games and whatnot and redirect it to the hardware to be able to use your hardware. Oh yes! To answer your original question, HL2 looks BEAUTIFUL on Vista, but it looks exactly the same in XP. And the audio works flawlessly too.

i've had no trouble with Vista 64 thus far... I even noticed that Half-Life 2 runs natively in 64 Bit.

http://www.synaptics.com/support/drive.cfm

the only one not on the dell site thats needed for an M90, although touchpad works without it too

dell canada has only 32bit drivers listed but in the details, the critical ones are listed as for 64bit also.

I am using this video 163.69

since my laptop is 32 bit CPU I can't run 64 bit on it, however, I had 64 bit Vista Ultimate run on my desk top, so far I had demo Crysis, Supreme Commnder, and play World of Warcraft, they all worked just fine. Only problems I had is Vongo not working after vongo did the upgrade on the client. but again vongo is a piece of sh*t company has poor programer, lying customer services, so I would not count on that.

I admitted I crash twice during play WoW when I have Dreamscreen as a back ground, after disable and just used normal back ground, it been rock stable.

there are alot of application didn't written for 64 bit, like Macro Media Flash player, 3Dmark 06, Adobe reader...etc, those will run in 32bit native mode. so far it just run and worked.

I think my hardware are far advance then Vista can handle, I am still try to find the way make all 8 core and 16GB ram scream
