i8600 Hard Drive hell

Any info or recommendations would be appreciated.

Unit is out of warranty.

This laptop has eaten 4 hard drives in the past year, the most current this morning. By eaten I mean horrible mechanical failure resulting in a sound not unlike a cd in a food processor with resulting failure to operate. Dell support was, as always, worthless and claimed they've never heard of a hard drive failure in an 8600 . Luckily this one is still under warranty from Hitachi and they will replace it free.

What might be causing these failures. This last drive lasted 3 months with light use. Is it heat? Power surge? HD Gnomes? Anything?

Thanks

H

Sounds like you just have the most rotten luck in the Universe. There's nothing the Laptop can do to cause catastrophic mechanical failure. And of course with the rest of the Laptop working properly it's nothing you are doing wrong. I had 2 Hard Drives in my RAID 5 array fail within months of each other once.

Wow.....I'm still running on my original 7k Hitachi which is 3 1/2 years old and she's still running strong as can be and surface checks are run constantly to make sure it's healthy.

Maybe you've just had a run of bad luck? :/
