Toshiba Satellite 5100-503 / 5105-503 CPU & cPad question!

Thread Starter
hey folks,

what cpu can i put into my s5100-503? currently it has the stock 1.8GHz
pentium 4 mobile in it. i found 2.0GHz/2.2GHz/2.4GHz ones on ebay
with the same specs (except the speed of course). can i replace it with
a 2.4GHz one for example or is the systemboard limiting that in any
possible way?

and a question about the touchpad: i have two satellites, a 5100-503
and a -506. only the 506 got the cooler "cPad". my 503 just has a regular
touchpad (no display). my question is if it is possible to exchange them,
put the cPad into the 503 and the regular one into the 506. would anybody
dissuade me from doing that because the cPad brakes/fails easier?

help to any of my questions would be much appreciated! thanks.

by the way, i got two answer to two often asked questions:

- the 5100 takes 2x 512MB ram = 1GB! at least in my case
i used samsung pc2100 ram for that and it works great so far

- disabling(!) the graphic card in the device manager in my 5100-603
did NOT solve the known gfx-defect (stripes on screen etc) and it works

so i hope i was able to help you with that as well

cheers,
vestax.

The general rule of thumb for CPU replacements in laptops is that the largest processor offered in that model that is supported by the same BIOS you are currently running. Its a mainboard issue. Also, it is very unlikely a faster FSB speed will be supported

@saugen48
thanks for your message. the BIOS version is 1.30
(it's the newest i could find @ the toshiba website).

do you know where i can find a changelog of the BIOS versions?
maybe there would be some information about cpu-support.
i would like to know what the biggest harddrive is i can put in
as well. 80GB is no problem i heard. but what about 120GB??

so you think i could try the 2.4GHz processor on my satellite?
as i wrote, it has the same specs except the speed. so FSB,
core voltage, socket and so on are the same.

what i am interested in: does a 2.4GHz satellite of the same
model year has a different cooling solution at all? if yes, are
there major differences? heat could become an issue maybe.

any idea about the cPad questions anybody?

cheers,
vestax.

Dont know, its up to you. Probably will be a crap shoot whether or not the bios will support it. Even though the rest of the specs look good and the FSB is the same, it would still be an unknown but possible. I could only find one processor for your model and believe it was a P4 1.6GhzI assume you are Canadian as the 5100 is a Cdn model.
Not a tech here so really cant tell you about maxing out the HDD, but dont believe there should be a problem. As with the increase in size of any processor, you can almost bet that heating will be an issue. dont know if a 2.4 was ever offered in that model

i am writing from germany. the 5100 and 5200 series were sold here, too.
the fastest 5100 i know of is a 1.9GHz version and in the manual of a
5200-series they wirte about an 2.5GHz for maximum speed, but i am
not quite sure, since i am new to toshiba. is there a model history anywhere?

tha major question is if the systemboards in all those versions have
different specs at all. if they are all the same it should be no big deal
to put a better cpu in there (except maybe a possible heat problem).

maybe i should call the toshiba technical support hotline and prey to get
a good technician on the line...

hi there!

i just wanted to update my topic for any guys who may have the
same questions. the 2.4GHz processor is working in my toshiba
laptop since around 2 weeks now. no problems at all. i've stress-tested
it a couple of times. the cooling fan is not running much more than
before and i have 600MHz more power. if you work with CAD and
render a lot it really is a step forward. it's a "QVR2" model. a "SL6VC"
should work as well. i paid only $36 from a nice seller @ u.s.!

the next thing i will try is to get 2GB of ram working in it. i know of
people which had problems even get 1GB working in that specific
model, but i will try it anyway.

i didn't try getting the cPad into my non-cPad laptop yet, since i
wasn't sure if i like it too much now. it has nice functions, but after a
while i woul probably not use it anymore. and it can bust easier than
a regular touchpad i guess.

cheers

The 5x00 series Satellites simply aren't designed address more than 1 GB of RAM and will either simply not boot or will crash right after the POST if more than 1 GB is installed--each time every time. As far as the cPad durability is concerned, I've got one in my 5205 and it's been 100% trouble-free since the beginning and that was nearly four years ago. Sure, if you beat on the cPad's LCD with your fist with enough force you'll crack it but you'll damage laptop in the process. As it is, the LCD is more than strong enough to withstand spirited finger-taps without issue. I find myself always using the cPad's built-in calculator, the numeric keypad and the calendar. Overall, it's a really useful feature that unfortunately Toshiba stopped offering on any of its newer laptops. If you want to retrofit one, you'll need one for your specific model with the supporting circuit boards and ribbon cables that lurk under the palm rest plus the cPad drivers.

so are you saying that i shouldn't even bother putting more ram in it?
is it 100% impossible? even 1.5GB (1GB + 512MB)? that would be sad.
but please let me know if you are 100% sure, so i can save the hassle
to order it from the u.s. (it's much cheaper than here in germany...).

i am still not sure if i will change the touchpad. the only thing i would
do it for is to have an easy to use calculater. but i got one in my cell
phone and i am using the calender in it as well, so there is pretty much
no need even with the fact that i find it kinda cool. saves me time...

1 GB is the absolute max. Any more than 1 GB and the laptop will not boot.

So your only RAM options are:

a) 256 MB (1x 256 MB)
b) 512 MB (1x 512 MB or 2x 256 MB)
c) 768 MB (1x 512 MB + 1x 256 MB)
d) 1 GB (2x 512 MB or 1x 1 GB) <- running one single 1 GB stick does work with a 5200/5205 but may not with the older 5000/5005 or 5100/5105.

Therefore any combination of RAM above 1 GB including 1.25 GB (1x 1 GB + 1x 256 MB), 1.5 GB (1x 1 GB + 1x 512 MB) and 2 GB (2x 1 GB) will *not* work.

Hope this helps.

hi, its a old thread i know but i have a question about hte s5100-503

i want change the 1.8ghz with a 2.6ghz from a acer notebook
http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=27442
can i run it?

and the other question is
the 1.8ghz cpu has no heat spreader
and the 2.6ghz got one

can i change the cpu?

if u dont know what i mean look @ this picture

its a example pic with a other processor
on the 2.6ghz is this
PENTIUM 4 2.60GHZ/512/400 SL6SB Malay

Sorry for my Bad english

vestax confirmed above that a 2.4Ghz would work. The pic you showed is also 2.4Ghz, give it a shot

cheers ...

from the picture is not the right cpu is only a example but thanks i try

what is with the heat spreader from the cpu...

must i remove the spreader on the cpu or does it work with heatspreader

the question is here does it work with the height its maybe 2mm more with headspreader

maybe the cpu overheat because the cooler does not fit?
2mm is quite thick. I would remove it and replacing it with IC Diamond paste. Don't over tighten the heat sink.

cheers ...
.. or Coollaboratory Liquid Pro (but not with aluminum heat sink!)

cheers ...
