1520 Vs. m1330

So I have been look for a gaming laptop around 13-15" when these two caught my eye. However I do not know how the 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 8600M GT (1520) compares to the 128MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 8400M GS (m1330). I love the design of the m1330 but if the 1520 comes with a better card I will go with that. Finally how do these two cards compare to the NVIDIA GeForce Go 7700? Thanks.

Needless to say the 8600 GT will wipe the floor with the 8400GS. At the moment the 8600 is probabaly th ebest bang for buck in a 15inch package.

however the m1330 is so sexy...the 1520 is blah looks wise.

But I agree the 256 8600GT will wipe the floor with the 128 8400GS on the 1330.

I wish they would include the option for LED screen, a biometric fingerprint reader and a slot-loading drive on the 1520 and 1420.

I have the same dilema - I just ordered the m1330 and then I noticed I could get a better graphics card in the 1520 for less.

I've done a lot of research and I'm still confused.

This site clearly shows a massive difference between the two cards:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-...ist.844.0.html

The 8600GT kills the 8400GS with more than double the 3Dmark06 score.
However, this site:
http://www.laptopmag.com/Review/Dell-Inspiron-1520.htm
Although showing a superior 3Dmark for the 1520 with 256mb 8600GT reports poorer gameplay results with Fear playing at only 12fps on full details compared to 15fps on the m1330 with 128mb 8400.

I will venture to say in practice I would imagine the 1520 to have superior gaming performance and the Fear test was just a one-off.

The problem I have is the features. The m1330 has the nicer screen (although lower-res it is back-lit by white led so it's brighter, thiner and consumes less power), it has HDMI out, longer battery life (1/3 more when doing a draining task and even more with light use), MUCH lighter (4-4.5lbs vs 6-6.5lbs).

My brain is telling me pick the 1520 you need the graphics power. My heart tells me pick the more stylish m1330 and play your games on a HDTV.

I watched a bunch of videos of the m1330 playing games on youtube and it seems to hold up well with current and older games like Half-life 2 and fear but I am worried about games like Crysis and BioShock. I know that DirectX 10 games will run 20%+ faster in DX10 mode so I know both laptops will improve in performance when the DX10 games start rolling out compared to users with DX9 cards running the games in DX9 mode but I don't want to have a choppy frame rate or have to turn off all the features that make the new games so breath-taking.

Maybe I'm expecting too much and should just shell out for a xps m1730?

I've already placed my order for the m1330 so I only have a few days to change my mind. Let me know what you decide.

Here is my advice from experience having owned an XPS, XPS2, M1710, M70 and an M90. Unless you lan build a desktop and keep the M1330 for the longer term. 2 months ago I ordered an M1210 off the outlet loaded for cheap (899 with tax and shipping), and will keep my Quadcore desktop and get the latest DX10 card for gaming on my 2407FPW monitor. I can upgrade down the line more easily, and for the features and portability my M1210 is great. I can do light gaming when I am on the road, and still have my xBox 360 and nice UPGRADEABLE desktop at home.

Now if this is your only machine then that is a different story. Then it would be better to hold off and get a 1520 or even better an M1730 with a WUXGA screen. A desktop replacement would be more in order.

Hope this helps...

For that fear test, I'm sure the reason the m1330 beat the 1520 is b/c they ran the test at native resolution for both laptops, thus giving the m1330 a HUGE advantage of only running at 1280x800 compared to 1680x1050 for the 1520; That means the 1520 had to render 72% more pixels than the m1330 and still managed to only get beaten by 3fps. Not too bad IMO

1330 graphics isn't that bad.. I've been playing online WIC on the train everyday on normal graphics, with no slow down.
On "highest" it slows noticably (my inspiron 9300 with 7800 gtx eats WIC on highest settng with no problem).

It's not a super gamming machine, but it's not bad.

everyone wanting the 1330 style in a bigger package only have to wait a month. According to bgr and engadget dell is releasing the xps1530. Should be a nice comprimise between the 1330 and 1730

Will it be the smaller package 1530? Like the 1330?
thanks

Using a little bit of logic here, I would bet that it is a 15" screen, 15" package.

For the size of the laptop, GPU isn't too bad on M1330.

If you are a gamer, just go for the 1520 though.

M1330 shouldn't be a main gaming machine.

FYI, my M1330 gets 3500 on 3dmark05 w/o OC'ing.

Not too bad for small laptop though.

I got my M1330 from Ebay seller locally so I can get discount on Ebay price which was 1925 back when the system just came out - I paid 1875 cash face to face transaction.

The guy still sells same spec (basically on my sig minus intel turbo memory, and comes w/ 1gb ram) for 1799. I don't think I've seen better deal on Ebay.

ID was locustmin and somenumbers.

GL.
