8600 dvd burner - Page 2

My specs: I8600 and nec nd-5100a

As I already wrote before: I created an bootable floppy and after I entered in the Dos mode: "nec5x00 -sec -mas -flash 5500rpc1.bin"
first a message comes like: "performing upgrade..."
but then all of a sudden, this message appears: "Can't read 5500rpc1.bin"

I have absolutely no clue what I did wrong...
just to be sure that we did the same:
the "nec5x00a.exe" and the "5500rpc1.bin" files are both on the Dos cd-rom...
or did you guys do anything diffrent?

sorry that I wasted your time...
I also thought its a stupid thing to burn it on the cd rom, but I read that in another forum!

how to access the c:\ drive in the dos mode? if you are still willing to help ;-)
because the dos mode doesn't recognise the c:\ drive....

I deeply apologize for my "dumbness"

ok i am also using xp pro with ntfs format. just follow the link i posted about how to creat a dos bootable cd-rom and u should be able to access c:\

maybe it's just that ur version of dos bootable cd-rom can't access c:\

Did this a couple of days ago... getting mixed results going to try a different dvd-r media brand (currently using some cheapy one)

(it burns okay, but when I do the copy back to the hard drive test, I get CRC errors)

not good at all...

I tried different bootable cd rom... an old image of an win98 start disk (that I created some time ago...) and the one linked by IANOU (above)... but everytime I tried to access the c:\ drive I failed...)
really weird... never had problems with that drive before....

NTFS based Windows Installtions Will not properly work with custom bootable disks since NTFS cannot be detected in MS DOS

Dell-Machina... if you use nero, it has a built in bootable disk image that you can select when creating a bootable CD (you might have to point nero to the file, it is in the nero folder). This boot image contains DrDos 7.03, and includes a file named "NTFSRead.exe".

Booting from a cd made with this image, I have no problems reading my NTFS drives.

BTW, I am using nero 6, oh, and I had to enable floppy emulation in the nero boot disk options to get the CD to boot correctly.

Confirmed it was my media. Looks like the firmware is okay and I am able to burn both DVD-/+R/RW!

WilliamG and Worthless, please be advised that flashing the drive will void your warranty. Secondly, worthless, in your sig, you do mean 1.4 ghz P-M right (not P4-m>?????)

This is interesting. I had the option of getting the NEC over the LG drive and I chose the LG because it supports Mt. Rainier Techology... the NEC did not. Can anyone confirm if the 5500 firmware for the NEC adds Mt. Rainier support?

Also.. is there a similar "hack" for the LG to support both +&- R?

Thanks,
A.F.

As you can see from the before and after screenshots, still no Mount Rainier.

I really do like that fact that the region is opened wide up and I can now burn DVD-R!

NEC ND-5100A USB Flash Drive Firmware Utility

For those of you who have access to a USB Flash drive, I uploaded a small utility that you can use to boot from the flash drive in order to upgrade to this firmware that essentially turns your ND-5100A into a ND-5500A DVD+/-RW burner. Enjoy!

Yes you can. In the USB Flash util I uploaded, you can select three options: 1 to save your current ND-5100A firmware, 2 to flash up to the ND-5500A firmware and 3 to flash back to the original ND-5100A firmware.

A.F.

NEC DVD+/-RW Recordable Drive , Model ND-5500A -OEM

DELL 4X/4X/8X DVD+R/+RW and 24X/16X/24X CD-RW Drive

You may want to think about ordering the DVD+/-RW ND-5500A from newegg.com since they are asking $50 less than Dell wants for the DVD+RW ND-5100A.

ok I did it...
u have to copy the files to the ram-drive (you can create that under dos).... then it's no problem at all!

Now I'm a proud owner of a nd-5500a!
Thanks for your support...
