No problems reading the DVD-R on my 8600 and my DVD players.

Are you running a CRC check though? The disc READS fine, on first appearance. There's just always a few files it seems, that it doesn't read properly, that you only notice when you run a CRC check.

If you only notice them when you run a CRC check then I don't understand what the problem is.

I haven't run a check on my DVDs as I have no problems with them on my notebook or other DVD players to warrant it. Am I missing something?

The problem arises when you need that file, as it fails to copy correctly from the media! No offense, but it's quite clear that you don't understand how this is works/doesn't work, as CRCs are BAD.

No offense taken. As long as they play fine for me and I am able to make copies from them if need be, I am satisfied. I figured CRCs were bad, but obviously they don't seem to be affecting what I do with mine. I am sure someone more knowledgable will be better able to converse with you on the subject. Good luck.

They don't work for you, if they have CRCs. A CRC on a DVD movie will have the effect of skipping during the movie, bad files being copied when installing games, etc etc. Unless you have no CRCs, it's not going to be working perfectly, even if you 'think' it is.

Just download CDCheck and see if there are any CRCs!

My advice to WilliamG. If you really care THAT MUCH about it then buy some quality dvd-r discs like Maxell ones. There's no any crc error on my fake nec 5500 with maxell dvd-rs.

Did the test for you on a couple of my DVD-Rs... As I suspected I still don't have any errors. Hopefully this is what you were looking for.

Thank you for testing. It's true that it might be a media issue, but since I've tried 3 drives and 3 types of media, CMC, MCC (and some other brand I can't remember right now ), I feel like the drive is just plain frustrating. I've burned all kinds of crap +R/+RW media, without a single coaster. With -R, it all goes to crap. I DO get the occasional good burn too, which is even more frustrating! If it was going to fail on the CRCs, I wish it would do it EVERY time so that I could narrow this problem down some more!

May I ask why you want to burn to -R media so badly? I find that +R media is now easier to come by and often cheaper for the same speed rating (i.e. 4x) when buying at a retail store.

Additionally.. I believe that +R disks are just as compatible as -R.

That being said... I can understand if you need to burn -RW media as I know that -RW is currently more compatible than +RW... although most new DVD players should read them just fine.

Is there something I am missing?

Well atomic for some people with 1st or 2nd gen home dvd players, the dvd player reads dvd-r's exclusively. If you stick a dvd+r it will just spit it out. I prefer dvd+r's as well though because of price. I got a spindle of 25 tdk dvd+r at bestbuy for 30 bucks with an instant rebate. Can't beat that for the quality.

btw dbk, what kind of media are you using?

I think it's just the principal.

Like why do people overclock their 3Ghz processors? Do you think they need the 400mhz overclock?

As well as this, my XBOX won't read +R discs.
And actually, +R is infinitely superior to -R in my opinion. Much better compatibility, DVD+R READS faster in all drives than -R, and faster burn speeds for +R than -R in general on desktop DVDR drives (probably because the media is better!)

My dad has a term he likes to use to describe this with for me and my brothers computer buying and modification needs .. He calls it "Iwantitis" meaning we want it even thou we don't really need it ..

Most people just want to do it because they can .. Not because they specifically need that feature ..

I myself did the mod but eventually changed back to the original .. To me it seemed it was slower writing to DVD's after the flash ..

I don't think anyone can complain or bitch or whine if it doesn't happen to work for them .. There is no guarantee .. Its just like people that overclock their machine and can't get the same clockspeed as someone else .. Too bad .. Get over it .. If it runs normal in its stock configuration and does what it was advertised to do then anything extra is just that, EXTRA ..

If your getting CRC errors just go back to the original bios and be happy with the +R drive that you bought since it does exactly as its supposed to .. If not then you have a valid reason to get it replaced ...

It's more than 'Iwantitis'. It's 'ICANititis!'.

Heck, if it CAN work, then let it work!

AS I said, my XBOX can't read +R, but it can read +RW (which is weird in itself). It likes -R though.

I primarily use the Ritek DVD+R (meritline.com has great deals) and TDK DVD+R (Best Buy had a sale of $25 for a 25 pack with no mail-in-rebate required!). But I had a 5 pack of Memorex DVD-R's that I purchased before realizing that my drive wouldn't burn on that media. Until now of course. I've burned on all 5 without problems. They play great on both my notebook and DVD players. Maybe I am lucky but I haven't had a single bad disk yet.

Figured that may be the case.

If you are bound and determined to being able to burn all types of DVD-R/RW, maybe you should look into replacing the ND-5100A with the ND-5500A. It is a direct replacement.

Thanks anyway for trying. It's a shame it doesn't work, but it's not the end of the world.
