With Dell charging over $400 for 1Gb PC3200 RAM with 9100 or XPS. I was looking at another options like kingmax or geil etc. When I brought this up with the Sales Rep, he said if you use aftermarket RAM chips and they cause any damage to the notebooks, the warranty is void.

Well, I seem to have found a way out and still save money while using Dell RAM. Order your 9100 / XPS with basic memory and then order 2x 512 Mb Modules from Dell site as in here. Currently, they are going for 153 a piece. So you endup with 1Gb RAM for another $306 Saving yourself $94 while still keeping the warranty active Cool, eh?
Oh yeah, dont forget to sell those OEM 256mb modules.

not to be mean, but he's an idiot. geil is one of the best memory manufactures on the market. as for warranty being void... i stick by my previous statement. he just said that to close the deal and make you pay the overpriced charge of 400 bucks for memory.

geil memory at newegg currently 126
crucial memory at newegg currently 120

i have a dell 256 and a centon 512 in my laptop. the centon has 0 errors when benched not bad for 70 dollar memory (100 at CC - 20 instant rebate - 10 mfr)

Solution: use third party ram...save money...enjoy performance...in the event of catastrophic failure..remove aftermarket ram...request rma and send to dell depot lol...they would never know that extra memory even existed...led alone void your warranty...

Thanks for the opinions and suggestions. What amuses me the most is, a customer can save $$ by ordering 1Gb from Dell although separately from system purchase and Dell itself hasnt figured it out. I guess that how Dell is minting money.

I shall place an order for 9100 in another 2-3 days. Meanwhile, I thought of this solution to help those who are opting for Dell RAM anyways.

Do not use GeiL ram they run at regressive clock settings and could cause al sorts of in compatibility problems like they have already in alienware and sager systems

As an FYI be careful ordering memory on the dell site. When I went ot get 2 256 mb sticks for my 9100 everytime I selected the 265 mb sticks it added the 512mb memory to my cart and vice versa.
