Anyone get this thing yet?

A quick check of Apple's availability site, http://www.apple.com/retail/iphone/ , shows that almost every store, with the exception of some in Cali, has iPhones available (I check FL, MA, NY and CA).

Where are you located? Cali?

Souther CA. Just out side LA.

I think I'll get one eventually. Only issue is that I'd have to switch networks and there is no reason to get one other than my gadget junkie-ism. The Q works just fine.

Maybe after they work out the first round of bugs. Then again, this isn't a Microsoft product. Perhaps Apple doesn't do as much of public beta test.

I have a Blackberry from work, so most of the features I already have. Might go check one out this week. Will let you know how it compares.

you might want to wait until they make a 3G version, at least

yeah, mainly want it for the cool factor. There's really no cooler gadget at this point than the iphone. The browser is cool I guess.

from what I've read the 3G version is supposed to be announced tomorrow for Europe.. that should be pretty funny

and I can see another ps3 in the making with the iphone. way over priced and forcing people to use one (crappy) network. you'd think Jobs would be smarter than that, but I guess greed gets everyone in the end.. it'll be nice to see yet another uber hyped product go up in smoke.

BTW, if anyone will admit to buying one, did you buy one for personal use or to make money off it in an online sale? I have a feeling that's going to be the case (again like with the ps3) with the iphone. There will be a few fools that spend crazy money online for one and then in a week or so there will be a glut of them, they'll be collecting dust on shelves, the classifieds will fill with them for below retail prices and apple/at&t will make excuses like sony has with the ps3..
BTW2, I read in today's paper that people are having serious issues activating the phone and are finding out that customer service doesn't exist with at&t. That's one major problem with them and from the ones I've met here that work there, lazy is a good word to use in describing their typical employee..

MyFox Dallas | Patience Pays Off Big for Dallas iPhone Fan

The video's pretty funny, but the gist is that a lady showed up with $16K in CASH trying to buy the store out. She pays the first guy in line $800 for his spot, only to find that the iphone was limited to one per person.

wut? Just because an iPhone auction on eBay just reached $2k you're starting to think that everybody and their grandma wants one?

I think waiting for the 3G version is a very valid point, but I think your "crappy network" comment isn't true. I switched from Verizon to Cingular/AT&T a few years back because of the bad Verizon coverage in Florida. I've had Cingular/AT&T for 3-4 years now and I've never hit a deadzone except next to a research lab in Somerville, MA. But I think that might be something they do in the lab. In any event, it was a smart move by Jobs because Cingular/AT&T is the cell service provider in the U.S. More customers = more $.

I use AT&T right now--it's okay. But then again, I have a nokia phone (chose it deliberately four years ago) that uses their TDMA network. Gets reception where all other phones just crap out.

Of course, AT&T has sent me a letter saying that they are going to shut down their base TDMA towers by the beginning of 2008...

Makes me wonder about the iPhone.
A question:
I understand that you can buy this phone at the Apple Store as well as through AT&T directly.
I also understand that you have to sign a 2-year contract to get this phone (at no discount!) through AT&T...is this also true if you buy the iPhone at the Apple Store?
TDMA networks are being phased out all over the world. The phone provider in my country is shutting down their TDMA network in 2008 as well.
@moidock: I'd heard something to that effect. I've been told that GSM is some sort of protocol sitting on top of TDMA in reality--I wonder if the Apple iPhone, currently TDMA, can just switch over to GSM with a firmware upgrade?
Doubtfully. A TDMA phone is a TDMA phone and is stuck with that particular network and use different methods to connect to cell phone networks and need to be programmed by a shop or the carrier to work with it.

GSM phones on the other hand work with a SIM card which you can simply transfer to another phone so you can switch phones easily without having to take the phone for reprogramming. The iPhone is actually GSM according to the Apple page.

They seem to be currently locked to use only with AT&T network but undoubtfully the online communities will find a workaround to unlock it.
No, that was my point/question: A true GSM phone can, if programmed correctly, simply be a "TDMA" phone. You're right of course: the "TDMA" phone has to be fully GSM-capable at the hardware level, and have enough processing capacity to do the GSM stuff.

Better watch out for DMCA notices--you know, because of all the "reverse engineering" going on.

I have a cell phone and an iPod.
Reducing to one device would be nice. (not $500 nice though)

But, from what I have read the feature I want most is not there.
I want to be able to Sync my Podcasts without connecting to my PC.
One excuse they give is that it would be slow to down load music over the EDGE network. (HSDPA faster but still slower than home connection)
iPhone has WiFi, i would be happy synching over WiFi.
So I am waiting untill the next version comes out, hopefully they will include that feature.
