Asus W1 / W1000 laptop

As I have been unable to find the laptop I was looking for (15.4 WSXGA+ screen/Radeon 9600 or better), I started calling some shops to see if they had any idea. The only one of any help (Bob @ Starpcs) told me about the new Asus laptop coming in a month or so - the W1000/W1.

Has anybody else heard about this? I found a link to some info and must say I am soundly impressed. It meets all my specs, plus it isn't a slouch in the gaming department. Here's a link.

Thoughts?

There's been quite a bit of discussion about this notebook. The thing is definitely sexy but for what it's worth the general consensus is that for the 2000-2500 euro's that msrp is set at...it's a rip off.

Santora how about the Asus M6N? Just about same specced as the W1, and definitely as nice a machine. Info for it can be found on the same page you linked...

The screen is only WXGA. I need a WSXGA+ screen res for the Avid software. And the reason I am impressed with this machine is the fact it does that in a 15.4" screen. There aren't any others out there right now with the exception of Dull and HP/Comcrap.

Talk where? I've been trying to find out more about it and have only read a few things - mostly press releases.

Oooh Avid... I use Avid at work... much fun!

That Asus info on the W1 mentions WXGA and WSXGA+ but lists 1280x800, same as the info presented for the M6N on the Asus site product specs. Wonder if it really is WSXGA+ or not...

Actually the site lists both screen sizes (WXGA and WSXGA+). But for some reason it only lists the 1200x800 instead of both...

Sorry, it was mostly discussions regarding press releases.

Stop the press!!!!

wait a sec... first: BEWARE OF THE W1000N HYPE!!!!!!
FIRST: there are no detailed specs anyware, but recent rants and reviews state one thing for sure: the screen is WXGA. No WSXGA is confirmed at the moment. It might, or might not. Who knows? Another issue is the Graphic card: which is 9600 with 64MBs (in a month or so there would be plenty of 9700s around)

SECOND: The Asus 6700n WAS scheduled to appear with WSXGA screen, and still didn't came. IT IS ALREADY SHIPPING IN JAPAN (it definitely exists) UNDER EPSON BRAND, but definitely a no-go in Europe nor USA.

THIRD: Here in europe we're still waiting for the 6700s and 6800s to arrive (they're SOLD-OUT) and considering the fact that the W1000n was first announced worldwide during a press-conference in Italy but the lappy didn't make to the website so far... expect a waiting time of 1.5-2 months AT LEAST.

FOURTH: The new Clevo 8x5x will have the same specs and should be out by the same time (but with integrated camera and MORE CUSTOMIZATION) costing proably a fraction...

I thought of the W1 myself... but stilll I'm beginning to think it's too little too late too expensive..

Reviews? Where? I'd love to read one. A few calls around indicated that the W1 would come with both screens as an option. And that those shown were the intial run to gauge market response. Fifty in total. Production run on the W1 is just gearing up now.

6700N? Is that the same as the 6n here in the States?

When you're dropping $2000, it's always a lot of money. And if waiting a month to six weeks so I can actually buy a machine with the specs I want, I'll wait. If it was much longer than that, well, I'd most likely go with something now. There are plenty of good machines out there today, but they lack the 15.4 wsxga+ screen i've been wanting.

Time will tell.

ASUS America says, The North American ETA on the W1000N is 6-2004 and it will only be available through Authorised ASUS resellers and not throught the whitebook channels.

If it's everything they say it is, I'll buy it through channels. Nothing wrong with that. Happy to spend the money on it.
