Area 51m 7700 Webcam

Hi,

I've been running Xp x64 edition on my Area 51m 7700 for over a year now without any problems, other than the webcam.

I've searched far and wide without success to find a driver for the webcam (ALI M5603C or BisonCam USB 2) although I have seen a few posts where people claim to have found drivers.

As Alienware seem determined not to provide any x64 support for these machines (despite initially selling them as x64 ready) I was wondering if anybody knows where I might be able to find a suitable driver please?

Thanks,

Paul

Have you tried contacting the manufacturer of the cam directy?

I'm assuming regular XP drivers won't work as you need signed drivers?

There is no Webcam driver for x64 xp.
Lot of customers call my office to found out.

Thanks all for your answers.

I've looked for a driver directly from ALI and have found no drivers at all. Standard XP drivers will not work as they are 32-bit, x64 requires 64-bit drivers.

I've found a few references where people claim to have found a driver, but a link is never posted. I did find one link to a set of drivers for another laptop (a Toshiba I think) with the same camera where it was claimed that an x64 driver was included. There were driver files for the camera but they would not install.

Seems pretty poor support to me as implementing a 64-bit version of the driver is pretty trivial, on the other hand as far as I know there is no Vista driver (32 or 64-bit) for the camera either, so it seems it is essentially unsupported from the day of release.

Ah well, I guess I'll keep looking from time to time, but it seems I won't be able to use the camera on x64 (or Vista for that matter) despite Alienware's claims that the system was 64-bit ready (to be fair, everything else works fine).

Thanks for the help anyway guys.

AW doesn't write software for other manufacturers components, so if the manufacturer of the camera has not released a 64-bit driver, there's nothing Alienware can do...

I'm sure if the cam manufacturer ever does release a 64-bit driver, AW will distribute it.

Sadly, I strongly suspect they won't. I have drivers for every other piece of hardware on the system, most of which were pretty easy to find (the one exception being the Promise RAID controller but having discovered the equivalent Clevo model number I found that driver in their download section). Not a single one of those drivers is hosted by Alienware...

Ah, I should have said then if AW ever officially carries 64 bit windows, they'll host the drivers...

Were you unable to find the drivers for the cam on the Clevo site? If Clevo doesn't carry the driver, there must not be one.

No, no 64-bit driver on either the Clevo or Sager websites either I'm afraid (although even those sites only have very rudimentary support for x-64 drivers and most are getting on for 2 years out of date).

Looks like the camera driver is going to escape me I'm afraid...
