Games on this video card...?

How does 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 8600M GT do for games? Can it run some of the major games on mid-high settings?

Thanks!

i think you will be able to run most the major games on mid settings. not sure about high settings though. also i dont know what clocks it will be? as the stock 7900 is a lot underclocked and also how much you can overclock the 8600. if you are a lot into gaming then dont get this, wait for atleast 8700 reviews.

It'll play games very well.

Should play games well at mid to high settings up to 1680x1050 (depending on the game of course)

Because it will? It's a very capable GPU.

Haha chris...I'm hardly on this section of the forums either and I kinda noticed a change in pace. Its like people just state their opinions with no proof. Btw, thanks jonnyp for providing your experiences

And a "because..." clearly disproves my point? The fact is the 8600m GT will play any game out at decent settings with a smooth frame rate.

No, it just invites you to prove yours with something other than a blanket assertion.

Thats a strong statement to be making. I wonder what causes you to say so. Do you own one? Have you tested one? Have you looked at the specifications for it and compared them to other GPUs on the market? Did you notice its a low to midrange part, better than, for example a Go7400M but it seems to give worse results in the few comparative results I have seen, compared to a Go7600M.

Now tell me why its going to run, say, Oblivion at medium settings (1280x1024, hdr, shiny water, medium view distance) with a 'smooth' (say, average 30fps) frame rate.

Now, you could argue that HDR is not 'medium', bloom is; but I would respond that NVIDIA claims that the 8xxx chips do 50% better than 7xxx with HDR.

If I had to guess (and it would only be a guess, lacking good hard data) it will run with some choppiness but be moderately playable. Its won't be smooth.

I run Win XP natively on separate partition, should be pretty spot on with other PC's with similar specs I'm assuming? I still have my trusty D610 so I can still post here

Actual data! Excellent. Yes, I would assume that your native XP results will be directly comparable. For Oblivion, what settings? HDR, bloom, or none? What are your level of detail/view distance settings? Did you tone down the grass or do other similar mods to get it to run well? And, what are your average fps?

Interested to hear if the claims of much better HDR performance bear out in a game.

I'm at work so I can't list specifics, but generally most of the sliders are medium but I bumped up draw distance to 3/4 of the "meter" and enabled water detail and shadows. I do not have AA enabled. I have HDR on, not bloom. I can't recall grass details, that is probably left on the default "medium" setting I'd guess? The game runs silky smooth without a hitch at these settings, both outdoors and indoors. Haven't checked FPS I'll have at it later and post if people want to know.

FYI there is a thread in the (Apple) benchmark forum about FEAR benchmarks w/ this video card if you're interested.

might also want to take a gander at this...

When will these guys learn to keep their opinions to themselves. Or at least provide some kind of facts if its not an opinion.

Based on all data I have seen about the cards hardware, it will not be playing anything on high settings, especially not Directx 10

Thanks once again for the detailed description. It really helps when comparing different systems.

Grass would be on medium unless you specifically adjusted it, yes (which many online guides suggest you do).

The important thing there is AA off and HDR on. This is interesting for two reasons. Firstly, the 8xxx series are supposed to do HDR both better and faster than 7xxx. If you don't mind, it would be great to get FPS scores with and without HDR.

Secondly, because in 7xxx its not possible to enable AA if you are using HDR. ATI allows it, and so does 8xxx apparently - again if you could confirm, that woud be very helpful.

For FPS, I suggest the free program FRAPS. It lets you record FPS for free (you can pay and then also record movies, etc).

Took a couple of Oblivion screenshots with fraps, the first one is at 1280 x 800 and the 2nd one is 1440 x 900, both pretty similar but not too much going on onscreen. Dips down to 25 fps occasionally on 1440 x 900, but still more than adequate for me. Both screens show 38-39 fps.

I can't enable both HDR and AA, only one or the other, oh well. Texture size is on "large" and self shadowing, grass shadows, etc. are all "on" .

Thanks for taking the trouble to do that, appreciated.

Its a pity it can't do HDR with AA, that was supposed to be fixed for 8xxx. ATI (suppose I should say AMD) has that feature for 29xx.
