Battlefield 2 Crashes to Desktop

Thread Starter
I bought Battlefield 2 Complete in hoping that I would be able to play on my Vista HP dv9000t laptop. Unfortunately I cannot. Everytime I start the game the logo comes up as it should then it flickers black then crashes to the desktop .

I patched the game with 1.41, disabled backround processes, and allowed it access past the firewall.

I have a feeling it has to do with the fact that I cannot change my refresh rate to 60 hz and that my only option is 59 hz. Something with BF2 and HP laptops makes the game not run

I have a dv9000t, core 2 duo t7200 2.00 mhz, 2.0 gb RAM, a 512 mb NVIDIA 7600 and my resolution is set to 1680 x 1050.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Anyone know of any solutions to this? Got a friend having the same issue. Windowed mode will at least show the debug error. Compatibility mode for XP, 98 and 95 don't help either. He is patched to 1.41 but I don't know what the main problem is: DX9 on a DX10 card, the 59 vs. 60 hertz issue, or just plain Vista.

you could try this but im not sure if it will damage your system or not. click start> run> type dxdiag and hit enter. on the more help tab click the "override" button. and click in the overide value space and type in 60. close everything out and try the game again. also battlefield games have always been flaky with virus scanners on so you may want to try turning it off first.

turn your res down

I distrust AV to the point i dont use it anymore

If your running Vista try XP

I have the same problem. I have done everything suggested here including installing XP. I was going to try an external monitor but figured what's the point? I'm trying to play on the road away from my home system. If anyone has another suggestion, I would be willing to try it. Aside from the BF2 mess, I love the laptop.

I'll try the override . . . but I'm hoping Service Pack 1 for Vista in Early 2008 will help with this problem. I don't have any antivirus software . . . so far my computer has been fine without any of that OS-slowing-software.

I need to change my refresh rate to 60hz from 59hz . . . if I override this could possibly damage my hardware . . . is this a safe change or should I leave it be for the sake of saving my computer? . . . it's only 1 hz as far as I see should I be worried?

Actually the option to override, even though it's in XP is not in Vista (yet . . . hopefully the service pack will fix that) . . . anything else?

do you have all the latest patches installed for the game? make sure you have vista completely updated too.

Yes I have Vista completely updated with the most recent patch of Battlefield 2 . . . anything else anyone?

well I had this happen and not sure if this is the cure for you but it worked for me.. install bf2 run it(actually get into the game so that it goes through video adjustment settings)then get out of it and then install 1.41 patch. I thought it was kinda odd but it worked. let me know if that works, curious if it was just a fluke thing. oh and this was just in XP, not sure about Vista...

I sent the following support request to EA
Quote:
I cannot play Battlefield 2142 nor Northern Strike. After I install the game and start to run the game it crashes and asks me to insert the disk. I have reformatted numerous times using both XP and Vista, and using various NVidia drivers nothing fixes the problem. I did some research and it appears that there are many people with the same problem. My monitor only runs at 59hz refresh rate, but when I plug in an auxilliary CRT or LCD monitor and select 60hz on the auzillary monitor, i can play the game on the auxilliary monitor. A quick search on Google confirms that many people are having this same problem. http://www.google.com/search?q=battlefield+59hz When can we expect a patch to fix this issue and allow us to play the game at 59hz?
This was their reply:

Hello! Thank you for contacting Electronic Arts Technical Support. I apologize for the difficulty you're having with Battlefield 2142. Unfortunately, the game does not support and is not tested to run in 59 Hertz refresh rate. Please make sure that the refresh rate is set to 60 Hertz in order to run the game. Should you require further assistance about this or any Electronic Arts games in the future please visit our website and review our extensive Self Help knowledgebase (http://support.ea.com). Sincerely, Chris P. EA Technical Support
