Upgrade m9700 to m9750?

Thread Starter
It looks like the chassis is the same (except for the color). Any reason I couldn't take my m9700 with SLi 7900 GS cards and replace the mobo, ram and processor and end up with a m9750 in a m9700 chassis, without the 7950 GTX card? I wantg to put the 8800m in my system when those are available, so I don't mind running the 7900 GS for a while.

Thoughts on this? Where could I get the parts?

yeah.. youd be better off just buying the base system + Better CPU for like 2300$ and going from there..

Only place I can think of that would have the parts in the US would be Alienware. They won't sell mobo's or processors for upgrades though last time I checked... You can always contact customer service and ask.

I think your best bet would be to sell the m9700 and order an m9750 once the DX10 cards are available...

I also wish the 9750 had color options, but the Matt Black sure is nice.....

Ya you should sell your system for a m9750 as it doesnt look like your mobo wont support DX10... still dont know if this is true but sure seems like it =/

I love the Black. I would have chosen it over any other colour. Its more sleek, and a little more subtle.

Even if you could get the parts, it will most likely be a hassle that is not worth the time and potential aggravation.

The parts will be very expensive too. With a retail Merom 2.33 GHz (I wouldn't attempt to go through all that aggravation for anything less) going for about $600, the mobo between $400-$700, you could easily have a $1000+ project on your hands.

If you sold the 9700, you would probably get enough money for it that it would not make economic sense to do the upgrade.

Also, you will almost definitely lose any warranty you have on the 9700. And whose to say that there are not some subtle differences (clips, risers, screw placement, etc.) in the chassis that will present problems in the transfer of parts.

Wait for the DX10 cards, sell the 9700, buy 9750.

there is nothing that says for sure a currently available m9750 will be 8800 compatable without a mobo replacement. please do your research and see the various other threads on that topic but suffice to say DO NOT make a purchase decision based on speculation.

I share Metal-Box's opinion : wait for dx10 GC, then, if you still feel the need of upgrading, sell your 9700 and get a 9750 (or whatever it will be its name at that time).

If AW doesnt put DX10 in the m9750 there isnt really any point to launching it, just has C2D, which is already outdated... which in the future will lead to profit loses
