Like the title says. What is the fastest 7200rpm 2.5" SATA notebook drive.

in terms of what you can get (separately) now, or what is technically "available"?

the seagate 7200.2 160gb drive is the fastest that you can get now at multiple places online, but i believe there is a 200gb made by some other company (which i've forgotten at the moment) that you can select while customizing a dell/alienware (and possibly others) laptop.

as yee alluded to, among hard drives with the same spindle speed, one with a larger capacity will be faster than one with a smaller capacity, due to greater data density on the discs.

On that line of thought, Hitachi's 200 GB drive is currently the fastest, but you can only get it from Dell at the moment. The fastest one that's widely available is, as yee said, the Seagate 160 GB drive

Are you sure the Hitachi is faster? Yes Hitachi is larger capacity but on the other hand Seagate is using perpendicular recording.

Tom's Hardware shows the Seagate 7200.2 as the fastest notebook drive available. But the Hitachi 200GB is not part of their comparison so it might be faster, who knows.

I'm not sure if the hitachi is faster or not, but using the rule of higer data density = higher speed, it should be.
