Driver Problems? (7950gtx)

I have an Inspiron E1705 I purchased right at the end of their shelf life so it came with an ATI X1400. I bought an nvidia go 7950 GTX off of ebay and I'm having some issues with it. I can't get it to boot with any drivers at all besides the generic VGA driver (currently running Vista Ultimate but going to try XP Pro soon). I've tried the current version on laptopvideo2go with the modded inf, and as soon as I reboot I get a blue screen from an nvidia dll file. Also tried the driver from dell for the XPS M1710 with the same result. Did I get a bad card or will it just not run in Vista? Any help would be appreciated.

Make sure to install the driver prope way. You don't uninstall previous drivers in Vista. Just click on driver setup (this is after you copy and replace modded inf, and OS will uninstall, reboot, install new driver. You can get more details on how to install drivers at nvidia site. Make sure to try different drivers too. I had E705 wit 7900GTX, and did not have problem like you did.

Thanks for the quick reply. The BSOD file is actually nvlddmkm.sys. When I boot into safe mode, the video card is recognized correctly as an nvidia 7950 gtx. At first I thought the XPS power supply I got might be bad, but I get the same result under battery power (when booting, it takes ~3 minutes to do nothing after the loading bar disappears and before it would normally load windows and then crashes). I installed the drivers first with an existing windows installation, and then I wiped it and installed in a brand new state, then updated windows and still got the same result.

Well, installed Windows XP Pro, installed drivers with modded INF and got a new BSOD:

*** Hardware Malfunction

Call your hardware vendor for support

NMI: Parity Check / Memory Parity Error

*** The system has halted ***

So since the ATI X1400 works just fine, I'm assuming it's the memory on the video card.

try installing the nvidia card and run the diagnostics on just the video card. If it gives you an errorthen yes it is the video card

Just ran complete dell diagnostics and it passed everything. I'm pretty sure this is because it doesn't test the memory on the video card (which would fall in line with the memory parity error). Is there any way to test the memory on the video card?

Did you run custom test on video card. On the diagnostics main choices there are 4 options: Express, Extended Custom and Blue screen(sumthing like that). Select custom test and under that you will find specific diagnostics for the video card. This test will throughly check your video card. Also Make sure that you are running the latest BIOS version. If not install it.

I'm also having trouble with my 7950GTX and drivers. I got a memory parity error yesterday, system halt, bla bla bla. The only driver I can get to work without deleting the nvcpl.dll is the driver off of the Dell website. To make a long story longer, the memory parity error may not mean diddly shit, and you should try the Dell driver to get yourself to ground zero. I can confirm that's the only driver that works without a hitch for me. Good luck.

Dynamite is correct, Diag32->Custom->Video will test the video memory first thing (it looks like a white bar going from top to bottom) before paging and pattern tests.

Thanks for the replies, but it ended up being the card. I got it replaced, and it worked fine with the Dell driver (previous card, as stated, would BSOD). Loving the 7950 GTX in the E1705, everything that i've tried runs at max settings except Bioshock (unfortunately, the demo at least).
