Quad-Core

How long before I NEED it? I'm starting to lay out plans for building a desktop and I can't afford a Quad-Core as they are priced now.

Could I hang on with a dual-core processor for at least 2-3 years, and if so which one should I go with between Intel and AMD?

I will be using the system mostly for light-heavy Photoshop work and games (Crysis!), as well as a variety of multi-task stuff like watching DVDs and working.

My poor Pentium-M is really having a hard time

I would suggest going for a Q6600 after July 22nd I'm pretty sure. They are apparently going to drop into the $200-$400 range which is what I'm planning on getting for Crysis as well . I'm not sure if it's "needed" but it will surely last far longer than a dual core.

you havent said what you do with your computer....

staying in a futureproof mentality will lead to wasting money if all you do is play games that could run off a 4 gen old vid card, 1 gig of ram, and a 2 gen old proc

there are still bottlenecks in having quad core.....so, even if you have the most high end rig, youre still limited

figure out what you want to do with it, and ill advise you or anyone else here will too

Basically this is the way I shop....

Low Budget:Buy the best you can.
Mid Budget:Buy a lower level CPU to save a little cash for the future or any upgrade.
High Budget:Buy the best CPU there is available.

whoops

ok still quad core wont be that needed, unless there is a true price drop from intel.....even then the price drop wont happen over night

newegg pays XXX ammount for proc's they have a profit in sight, so once they sell XX ammount of the proc's they bought, then they buy more from intel or a teir 2 dist. then they get the price drop

Last I look the 6600 was $399 - isn't that affordable? But I'm not buying a desktop now because of all the problems with Vista, the 8800, and 64 bit drivers. I can wait even 2 years because my E1705 is a good enough desktop replacement.

$399 for a budget'er isn't really affordable (at least for a gamer) For me, that extra $200 would much rather be spend toward a video card. Also, although the price drop may not be immediate, I think it will happen soon enough.

To make you guys feel better, I paid over $1000 for my quad core. I do have a monster desktop though. It is pretty much maxed out, but I sold my second 8800GTX. It did not work well with my dual monitors. I don't game much, I just like high end computer hardware.

I didn't think I'd ever find a person like myself. I think even if I didn't like gaming anymore, I would continue to build systems that were far beyond necessary and over the top and always upgrade them to be the best possible thing out there.

Gah can't help but love spending money.

Yeah Larry, SLI doesn't work with mutli-monitors. You have to turn off SLI any time you want to enable the second display. And enable/disable SLI requires a reboot EVERY TIME.

Well that is the deciding factor against SLI for me. I use two screens everyday. Good... I didn't want to spend the extra money anyways. A Physics processor would benefit my gaming as much as SLI anyways right? That costs less that $200, vs. at least another $500 for SLI.

physics processors don't do much for you unless you play all 5ish games that actually support it. That turned out to be more of a flop than anything. I'd suggest putting that money into your pocket instead

Also, that Q6600 is being quoted for $266 after the price drop.

I found that out after the fact. I should have researched more. A friend loves my card though. I feel good about that. I could have sworn, I did the reboot. Maybe not, but I had a terrible time recovering from it.

I have been doing it for a long time. I am 41 now. I am blessed though. I also don't have any other expensive hobbies to blow money on. No motorcycle, boat, expensive collector cars, ect.

To the original poster. Yes, do not waste your money. One 8800GTX or similar should be plenty. Save the money for more ram, more hard drive space, better monitors, ect.

Good luck.

That's pretty much how I am too. I'm 15 almost 16 so some of the above items could become more a part in my life but I don't really think I'm going to want a boat or fancy car or whatever it comes to I guess as for expensive hobbies, collecting/working with computers is actually cheaper than buying hundred thousand dollar cars

the bottom line is you wont need it for years.... but they will be very available in a few weeks
