Cool... I guess I can wait a couple more weeks.

In the meantime, here is the start of my new system: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...IN#detailspecs

BTW, this may be a stupid question but can I run an "SLI Ready" GPU on a non-Sli motherboard?

You can run one of them, just not two in SLI

Good start

What GPU are you considering for the system? You're going to want to make sure it fits in that chassis.

Good call. I thought they were universal or something, lol. I guess don't really know what to look for to find out if one would fit or not. Since the word is that the current GPUs are dropping in price, I'm considering the Q6600. Maybe something like this: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...530&CatId=1599 Then again I'm always up for suggestions, I don't know much about motherboards. If there is something better for the money out there I would look into it.

Ahh that is a pretty good deal :] With price drops you should see even better prices hopefully!

Also, try to find out some measurements via other desktop forums *www.hardforum.com* and bring your case for them to analyze. Also, look at lengths on the GPU's you're looking at.

Cool. You've been a lot of help, I appreciate it! Is there anything in particular I should look for if I were to buy a different motherboard? This one looks good http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...511&CatId=1533.

That is a very good board. It even supports SLI if you decide to go that way with it

Another good board, though it does not support SLI is the P5K series from ASUS. SolApathy from these forums is using the deluxe version and seems to be enjoying it significantly. It's a bit more expensive than the board you posted, but you could also go for the P5K basic version which is not significantly worse from what I can see. Either one would probably work out fine for you

Indeed, still in the $250 range. I want to keep the total cost for processor and motherboard below $600, so I will have to see just how cheap the Quads drop to.

So thinking into the future, would a board like the PK5 would support the brand new processors coming out next month, without any loss in performance? Maybe if I went for a 2 Duo now I could spring for a Quad in 18 months or so.

They certainly should. They seem to be qualified from what the manufacturer says about them supporting penryn's 1333mhz FSB and being able to hold those processors. It shouldn't cost you any performance and this is exactly why I'm going with a P5K board for my build I would certainly like to be able to upgrade as far as possible without having to deal with removing the motherboard and such. EDIT: Doing the C2D ----> Quad core isn't a bad idea. You could probably wait a while and upgrade to a quad penryn even for cheap at that point.

Very good. The future looks bright for my build!

Preordered myself a Q6600 with G0 Stepping. I went to the store here in Nagoya today and they promised me a G0 stepping tommorow. I can't wait!

I do have to buy Ram though. What do you recommend for my Q660 G0 that's going to be water cooled? DDR2 800 or DD2 1066?
Get DDR2 1066 if you can afford it JFvergara. The higher is technically the better, however if you got 800mhz I think you'd be fine as well. Both are plenty fast.

Also, Red Cloud, the price drops occurred as planned to $299 for the Q6600. I am not building this time around so I wanted all of your advice on something. I will probably be ordering from www.avadirect.com and they still have the prices up at +330 more than the E6420 for the Q6600. So, Do I wait until their stock sells out or ask them to price match me or what?

Well it wouldn't hurt to ask. If they say no I'd order with no CPU and put it in myself.

Yeah, that makes sense. I think I may just downgrade to the lowest processor there is and just replace it myself. I emailed them and hopefully I'll hear back soon I'm also considering just ordering with the system a E6600 and deal with that until I feel it isn't holding up well enough and then pop in a penryn 1333fsb quad after they drop price next year

I'm pretty sure that's what I'll be doing too. That puts the cost for a good board and CPU right now around $500. A good GPU for $300 or so, plus smart shopping for the other components comes out to right around $1,100 (Without OS).

w00t dropped their prices to bring the price back to where I hoped it would be! Can't wait to play with the quad core

Nice! Soon you will be multi-tasking away, heheh. Even though I've already purchased a power supply, this deal looks very enticing: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...45-2009%20GRID what do you think?

That deal looks amazing! I would want to know the branding on the PSU in there though since some seem to be very unreliable which could be a bad thing. The Tigerdirect deals around seem to be pretty good in terms of combo packing. Ya know, the funny thing is that I am probably not very likely to be using the quad cores for quite a while since I don't do any graphical rendering or something along those lines. I've ordered though with the quad core and I don't have any regrets, I can OC it to nice speeds that will blaze through anything that doesn't use multi-cores anyway Anyway, keep on the updates! It's enjoyable discussing desktop parts on occasion.
