2.16 GHz vs. 2.33 GHz for m9750

Thread Starter
i was wondering what the differences between the 2.16 GHz and 2.33 GHz processors were and how much of a difference i would actually see. I plan on getting a single video card for now, maybe upgrading it into sli mode later or if the 8700m gt or any 8800m, if it comes out, become available for the m9750, upgrade to that, if possible. (if anyone knows any news about this, please comment).

i will be using the m9750 for skool and will be using these programs:
Adobe Creative Suite: $400 (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat)
SketchUp (Annual Rental) $45 (Rented through the Architecture Dept. in the Fall)
Form Z (Annual Rental): $95 (Rented through the Architecture Dept. in the Fall)
as well as autocad and photoshop cs2.
i will also occasionally play some games, time permitting.

i don't know which processor i should get.
please help me!!

Go for the 2.33

go for the 2.0...the price premium for the 2.16 & 2.33 isn't worth the performance gains...imho

hey man, im an architecture student too, where are you at?

also, PM me about some software

If you can wait a bit more and have the money you could get a C2E 2.60 cpu which would be ideal for your needs...

Heres a nifty chart you can use to compare performance....

For the software you use, i'd say the difference between 2.0 and 2.33 isn't big at all. It's just 330 Mhz. Only benchmarking software will really notice the difference, belief me. If you want to 'future proof' it (if possible in the PC industry haha) go for the 2.33 Ghz, but i honestly think it isn't that nessecary. I think getting more RAM is better money spent.

i'll be going to cal poly slo.

any idea when the c2e 2.60 is coming out? i've always been one to go for the best and if it'll come out this year, then i might be willing to wait. it also depends if my classes in the fall require a laptop, since i'm not taking any design classes.

and if i decide to upgrade to the 8XXXm series, should i stick with the 2.33?

i'm deciding on buying a 2 Gb ram from newegg. maybe 4 Gb, if it's not too much.

does anyone know if it's possible to upgrade the cpu? i recently cleaned my desktop and took out the processor to clean the old thermal paste to use a new thermal paste? since i did that, i thought upgrading a cpu might not be too hard. (referring to second paragraph)

I doubt (but hope) the C2E 2.6/2.8 will work with the current chipset in the m9750, however we'll find out soon enough, its set to debut in Q3/Q4 of this year from various reports around the web.

You can upgrade cpu's with the system, but until new processors are released we won't know if the bios supports them or not... Also, user performed cpu upgrades void your warranty.

The difference in frequency will just affect speed, these current processors all perform the same functions, it's just a matter of speed.

If you're a gamer, the most important thing is gpu's not cpu, but with rendering and CAD type programs, the dual core processor and speed will affect the render time.

The x7800(2.6) WAS suppose to come out July 8, 07 but it doesnt seem like that happened and the x7900(2.8) is suppose to come out Sept. 2, 07 Btw if you are talking about a desktop processor they already have one at 2.93 i think...

Mustang Alumni here, class of '06. ^_^ Staying on-campus or off? Anyways, processing power gradually improves every 3-4 months, so there's no real way to "Future Proof" your system...the closest you'll get would be to buy the best available right now (2.33 ghz), and that should be the top choice throughout the Summer and Fall. Either way, don't expect either CPU to drop to the "mid-grade" range anytime soon, or even really bottleneck your syste. If you've got the cash and want the small % boost, then go with the 2.33. IMO, it's not worth it at the moment.
