HP DV4170us Halts in certain positions?

Been working on this for a few days now and i'm trying to trace where the problem is coming from. Here is the situation...

Laptop came to me because it was turning off randomly. The customer said the laptop was dropped a while back, but the problem existed before the drop.

After some messing about, it seemed to be overheating, so I cleaned off the HS and re-applied some thermal paste. Temps are down, but it's still acting a bit funny. Sometimes when laying flat on a desk, the notebook will just halt and everything stops. Even the clock. If I lift the front end of it off the table a bit, everything starts working again like nothing happened (except clock, as it picks up where it left off). It does this both on battery power and with the AC adapter.

In the midst of cleaning off the HS, I also disassembled most of the laptop and cleaned out any dust inside. I didn't see anything amiss like loose wires, etc.

Any Ideas as to what i'm looking for? Obviously it can't be something very critical, or the whole laptop would shut off or reboot. I have yet to have it shut down on me as described by the owner.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

I have a feeling there's a loose solder joint near where the laptop was dropped. If I touch the front-right part of the laptop where the speaker and CD-ROM meet, I can reproduce the halting problem every time. There is a piece of plastic missing at this very spot, though I did not see any visible damage when I dissassembled the laptop yesterday.

Also, it does not matter how long the machine has been powered on. Even on a cold boot I sometimes have to nudge it before it boots up.

I am having a very similar issue and its driving me crazy. I have to put a pen under the notebook, just under the touchpad, then put pressure on both sides of the front as I type or it just freezes in place. Sometimes it requires less pressure than others. I would love to hear about how to fix it. Is it something I can do with a solder gun, or is it best left to the pros? What is your location? I'm in Fresno, CA...don't know if I'm in your neck of the woods.

hey whats going on. this is a repair that should be left to someone who has done this before. if it is not done properly, then you could start experiencing other issues. i have done this repair hundreds of times at work and ive dont it for a few people on this message forum. i live in chicago. if you are interested in having your notebook repaired, just let me know. i have had the unit repaired the same day i received it. there will be very little down time. this is a huge problem with the dv4000 series as well as the compaq counterpart the v4000. they are nice units but this issue is something that needs to be addressed by HP/Compaq. how do they expect people to use the machine without putting pressure on the palmrest

I'm having the same problem. I'm taking mine to get fixed but I'd like to know the cause of this problem so that I can tell the person fixing it.
